Outrage at NLU Trichy: Students Slam VC Nagaraj’s ‘Sexist’ Remarks, Demand Accountability

The CSR Journal Magazine

Students at the National Law School of Tamil Nadu (NLU Trichy) have expressed strong dissatisfaction following controversial remarks made by Vice Chancellor V Nagaraj. The comments were allegedly made during a meeting intended to discuss student welfare, but veered towards the attire of female students. The Vice Chancellor’s statements, which many have labelled sexist, have sparked significant protests on the campus.

According to Class Representatives who attended the meeting, Vice Chancellor Nagaraj referred to his comments as “fatherly advice.” However, he was reportedly engaging in the kind of “moral policing” he claimed to eschew. The students revealed that he remarked on the presence of female students wearing shorts, suggesting that such attire “invites sexual harassment” and serves as “a distraction” for others. Furthermore, he implied that it could tempt faculty members, which adds to the controversy surrounding his statements.

Vice Chancellor’s Remarks and Clarifications

In response to the backlash from students, Vice Chancellor Nagaraj issued a statement that failed to quell the outrage. Instead of offering an apology, he reiterated that the dress of students could reflect on the institution’s reputation. His exact words included, “In my personal opinion, if you want to improve the institution’s reputation, presentable dress may be one factor.” This response has been perceived by many as dismissive and unempathetic to the concerns raised by students.

He also stated that he is “not here to answer questions,” asserting that he speaks his mind freely and is accountable primarily to his higher authorities. By claiming he is the only Vice Chancellor in the country willing to address dress codes directly, he continues to generate debate over his views on student attire and institution standards.

Nagaraj’s clarifications have not ameliorated the situation; rather, they appear to have intensified the protests on campus. Students are demanding a recognition of their rights and respect for their choices regarding clothing.

Past Controversies Involving Vice Chancellor Nagaraj

The recent events at NLU Trichy are not unprecedented for Vice Chancellor Nagaraj. In 2016, while he was affiliated with the National Law School of India University (NLSIU) in Bengaluru, he reportedly faced backlash for similarly derogatory comments regarding a student’s choice of clothing. During that incident, he allegedly humiliated a student for wearing shorts, escalating the matter to personal attacks against her character.

When confronted about his remarks, Nagaraj purportedly resorted to inappropriate analogies, telling the student, “You can come to class without a dress also. That is how your character is.” Furthermore, he allegedly made disturbing comments about parental motivations for marriage to validate his views on “decorum.” Stories of his past behaviour have resurfaced alongside the current protests, prompting students to point out a concerning pattern in his conduct.

Students have expressed that the ongoing protests are a reflection of their growing intolerance towards what they perceive as “sexist rhetoric” and the broader issue of institutional discipline being misused as a form of control. They are calling for a change in leadership that respects individual rights and promotes a more inclusive environment.
