OpenAI Launches Codex Plugins to Automate Banking, Sales and Other White-Collar Jobs

The CSR Journal Magazine

OpenAI has launched a new collection of tools aimed at assisting businesses in automating various professional tasks. This strategic move includes six new Codex plugins specifically designed to support activities typically performed by bankers, sales teams, product designers, analysts, and other knowledge workers. The introduction of these plugins reflects the growing trend of artificial intelligence moving beyond software development and integrating into conventional office work.

This initiative coincides with a period of heightened competition among AI companies, all eager to demonstrate the tangible business benefits of their technologies. While coding assistants have been among the most prominent successes within generative AI thus far, OpenAI envisions that the next phase of expansion will focus on enhancing the efficiency of professionals working across different sectors.

OpenAI has reported that Codex currently boasts over 5 million weekly active users, a significant increase from earlier figures, expanding more than six-fold since the launch of its desktop application in February 2026. Although software developers remain the predominant user group, knowledge workers now account for approximately 20 per cent of the user base and are reportedly growing at a faster rate.

New Features and Plugins for Diverse Professional Needs

To attract a wider audience of knowledge workers, OpenAI has introduced six specialised plugins that encompass data analytics, creative production, sales, product design, equity investing, and investment banking. These plugins are not merely basic chatbots; they integrate instructions, connections, and contextual information to enable Codex to execute tasks that are typically associated with professionals in these areas.

OpenAI asserts that these tools are functional from their initial usage, although there is potential for improved performance when incorporated into bespoke business workflows. This approach aims to streamline operations and enhance productivity right from the outset.

The introduction of these plugins highlights the rapid evolution in the competition among AI firms, especially in attracting enterprise clients. Competitor Anthropic has recently unveiled industry-focused AI agents aimed predominantly at the finance sector. In May 2026, Anthropic launched ten specialised agents designed to undertake common financial tasks, reinforcing its partnerships with banks and financial data providers to promote deeper integration within large enterprises.

Broader Implications for the Financial Sector and Beyond

The financial sector has emerged as a crucial arena for AI development, with various reports indicating significant collaborations. For instance, Goldman Sachs has been partnering with Anthropic to create AI-driven agents capable of managing internal functions such as transaction accounting and client onboarding. The institution anticipates that these technologies will expedite the execution of numerous operational tasks.

In light of these developments, OpenAI’s latest offerings indicate a similar trajectory, although the company is expanding its focus beyond finance to encompass a wider range of corporate activities. OpenAI is confident in the capabilities of AI systems to manage substantial work across organisations, from data analysis and presentation creation to aiding sales teams and supporting product development endeavors.

In addition to the new plugins, OpenAI has unveiled a feature named Sites, which enables Codex to convert its outputs into hosted interactive websites rather than just generating local files. This launch is supported by collaborations with companies such as Wix, Replit, and Figma, with additional partnerships anticipated in the future. Furthermore, a new option called Annotations allows users to highlight specific portions of a document, providing Codex with enhanced context when performing tasks, which could elevate the quality and relevance of its outputs.
