On Friday after a contractual nursing staff of Sawai Man Singh (SMS) Hospital committed suicide post losing his job, demonstrations have spread to several parts of Rajasthan. Around 6,500 contractual staff hired at SMS through private placement agencies were removed. These staff were recruited during the tenure of Ashok Gehlot-led Congress government in 2022. Post removing these contractual workers, the state government has opened the nursing positions, and the new staff would be appointed for five years on contractual basis. The laid off staff are protesting and demanding to regularize the laid off workers and accommodate them in the current recruitment drive for 3,000 Nursing Officer posts.

Who was the nursing staff who committed suicide?

The deceased nursing staff has been identified as Deepak Charwal, 30, from Dausa district. He had been working at a women’s government hospital for the past three years. And he was among the thousand terminated staff. As per the co-workers he was terminated last week and since then he was in stress. While other terminated staff joined the protest, Deepak returned back to Dausa and consumed poison. After the news of Deepak’s suicide broke, many nursing staff gathered outside SMS hospital along with Congress MLAs Rafiq Khan and Amin Kagzi and demanded justice. Deepak’s family shared that he was the sole bread earner of the family, he is survived by wife, a 4-year-old child and his wife is expecting a second child. As per his relative, he was in stress and disturbed over his employment and concerned as to how his family would survive.
