Nitin Nabin’s Tonk Visit Signals BJP’s Political Push into Sachin Pilot’s Stronghold

The CSR Journal Magazine

On Monday morning, BJP Chief Nitin Nabin started his first official visit to Rajasthan. This marks the initiation of the political outreach from Tonk (100 kilometers from Jaipur). The constituency has been selected with a lot of brainstorming. Tonk is considered the political stronghold of Congress leader Sachin Pilot. Nabin was received by Rajasthan Chief Minister Bhajan Lal Sharma, Deputy Chief Ministers Diya Kumari and Prem Chand Bairwa, and BJP President Rajasthan Madan Rathore. On this occasion the former Chief Minister Vasundhara Raje was also present.

BJP Strengthens Organisational Base in Eastern Belt

Nabin inaugurated the district BJP office in Tonk and virtually inaugurated BJP offices in Bundi, Pratapgarh, Dungarpur, Churu, Pali and Barmer. He will also lay the foundation stone for a new party office in Jalore. The decision to start the Rajasthan tour from Tonk is seen as a key political strategy, especially when it comes to eastern Rajasthan. Tonk is considered a gateway to the region, and the BJP has sent a clear message that the party wants to strengthen its presence in the district, where the BJP has a very less hold. However, in recent years, the BJP has improved its performance in the eastern belt. In the 2023 Assembly elections, the BJP managed to secure 13 seats, including important districts such as Bharatpur, Karauli, Sawai Madhopur, Dholpur and Dausa, while Congress won eight seats and one independent won.

Political dynamics of Tonk

The majority of vote bank is of Muslims and Gurjar and Gurjars, who have long been closely associated with Sachin pilot. And now BJP starting the tour from Pilot’s stronghold constituency clearly is seen as a challenge to Congress. During a press conference ahead of the visit, the BJP State President Madan Rathore made political speculation by talking about Sachin Pilot. He said that Pilot is a capable leader and if he wished to join the BJP, he would be welcomed with open arms.

This remark by Rathore, and now the visit to Tonk has once again started discussion in the political circle. The 2020 political crisis is being remembered when Pilot along with his MLAs camped in Manesar against the then Chief Minister Ashok Gehlot.

This development is being seen as an opportunity to expand organization and also use the ongoing rift within the party in the state. During this visit, the BJP is also discussing the internal dynamics of Vasundhara Raje’s camp.
