Nearly 300,000 Girls Vaccinated as India Expands HPV Drive Against Cervical Cancer

The CSR Journal Magazine

The Central Government announced on Tuesday that the nationwide rollout of the Human Papillomavirus (HPV) vaccination programme has gained momentum, with nearly 300,000 girls aged 14 having received the vaccine within two weeks of its launch. States including Madhya Pradesh, Andhra Pradesh, Tamil Nadu, Gujarat, Odisha, and Mizoram have shown the highest vaccination rates so far. This initiative aims to protect adolescent girls from cervical cancer, recognized as a prevalent yet preventable form of cancer among women in India.

India faces a significant challenge from cervical cancer, accounting for over 80,000 new cases each year, which constitutes nearly one-third of global incidences. The disease stands as the second most commonly diagnosed cancer among women in India, following breast cancer. The national campaign commenced on February 28, administering the Gardasil vaccine, which targets HPV types 16 and 18, responsible for a majority of cervical cancer cases, alongside types 6 and 11.

Vaccination Efforts and Target Demographic

The vaccination is offered voluntarily as a single-dose shot to girls within the 14-year age group, which is estimated to encompass approximately 11.5 million individuals across the country. A senior official from the Union Health Ministry indicated that the initial enthusiastic response can be attributed to a rising awareness among parents, educators, and community members regarding the advantages of early immunisation. This positive engagement underscores a growing commitment to preventive healthcare and highlights the long-term benefits of the vaccine.

Interestingly, the campaign’s timeline has been deliberate, as it coincides with school activities and examinations in several regions yet still observed strong participation levels. Authorities anticipate that vaccination numbers will increase further post-examinations, as outreach efforts will become more extensive, facilitating enhanced coverage across the states.

Collaboration for Effective Implementation

To ensure efficient execution of the HPV vaccination programme, health officials are cooperating closely with educational institutions, local governance bodies, and frontline healthcare workers. This collaborative strategy is designed to enhance accessibility and streamline the delivery process, thereby assuring that eligible girls can receive the vaccine without interruption.

As the initiative progresses, it signifies a critical public health measure aimed at alleviating the future impact of cervical cancer in the country, amplifying the significance of early intervention in women’s health protection.
