The arrest of Karan Aswani, also known as Kamal Sindhi, represents a significant development in the kidnapping case of Jaipur businessman Narendra Nath Datta. Aswani was apprehended after allegedly fleeing to Dubai following the incident. The Rajasthan Anti-Gangster Task Force (AGTF) played a crucial role in his capture and subsequent return to India.

The unfortunate event transpired on August 20, 2025, when Datta embarked on a trip to Vaishali Nagar, Jaipur, accompanied by an acquaintance and his driver, Yogesh. Concern arose when Datta’s mobile phone ceased functioning, prompting his family to initiate a search for him. The following day, they received a call from his phone, announcing his kidnapping and issuing a ransom demand for his release.

An FIR was promptly lodged at the local police station on August 21, 2025, leading to a swift investigation. This operation ultimately culminated in the rescue of Datta and his driver. The police uncovered that the kidnappers impersonated law enforcement personnel during the abduction and held the victims at multiple locations, including Agra, while demanding ransom from their families.

Progression of the Investigation

In the aftermath of the kidnapping, law enforcement arrested several accomplices, including Harsh Gautam, Kanak Ganguly, and Ajay Beniwal, known as Shaka. The investigation revealed that the stolen Innova Crysta, belonging to the victims, was found in Gautam’s possession, and a Swift car used in the crime was also confiscated.

As the investigation advanced, the police managed to ascertain the specific roles of those involved in the kidnapping. Despite the progress made in apprehending other suspects, Karan Aswani remained on the run. Following his identification as a key figure in the crime, a court-issued arrest warrant was obtained for him. However, by the time efforts intensified to locate Aswani, he had already left the country.

Prompted by reports of his relocation to Dubai, the AGTF broadened its investigation efforts. They issued a Red Corner Notice for Aswani and maintained ongoing communication with relevant law enforcement agencies, including Interpol in Abu Dhabi. Technical means were utilised to monitor Aswani’s movements, ultimately leading to his capture by the Abu Dhabi Interpol team.

Return to India and Legal Proceedings

After Aswani’s detention, arrangements were made for his return to India. An AGTF team, led by ASP Siddhant Sharma and accompanied by officers including DSP Ravindra Pratap and Police Inspectors Sunil Jangid and Ram Singh Nathawat, departed from Jaipur on August 31. Upon fulfilling legal and procedural requirements in Dubai, they secured custody of Aswani.

Aswani arrived back in Jaipur late on Thursday night, where further legal processes are anticipated to take place. The investigation into his alleged involvement in the kidnapping and organised crime is set to be expanded. Senior officials, including Additional DGP Dinesh MN and DIG Yogesh Yadav, supervised the operation, with significant support from the AGTF officers.

Karan Aswani’s criminal history is extensive, reportedly spanning 25 years. His first recorded offence dates back to 2000 with a murder case in Murlipura. Subsequent offences include charges of rioting, assault, wrongful restraint, and more. Most recently, he faced allegations concerning kidnapping and extortion as of 2023, culminating in his involvement in Datta’s kidnapping in 2025. The authorities remain focused on further legal action against him.
