US Secretary of State Marco Rubio stated that India and the United States are currently finalising the details of a long-awaited trade agreement. During his visit to India, he conveyed optimism that the negotiations could be concluded within weeks. He noted, “We hope to have it even next week or the week after. But we’re down to the very final details.”

Rubio expressed confidence in the positive trajectory of the discussions, emphasising that both nations have ample reason to feel optimistic as they progress towards finalising the trade deal. His remarks came amid broader efforts by New Delhi and Washington to enhance economic cooperation and bolster their strategic relationship across various sectors.

As the negotiations near completion, Rubio noted that such an agreement would not only address tariffs but also aim to foster a more conducive economic environment for collaboration in the future. He remarked, “I think it’s weeks, not months,” regarding the timeline for potential completion.

Benefits for Both Economies

Rubio characterised the proposed trade agreement as mutually advantageous, suggesting it would enhance investments and provide new opportunities for joint ventures between India and the United States. He stated, “It’ll be a great thing because it’ll be good for both countries.”

Highlighting the significance of this bilateral relationship, Rubio reiterated that the deal extends beyond just tariff negotiations. He explained that it is crucial for establishing the groundwork necessary for future economic engagements between the two countries. He said, “It’s not just about tariffs, but about creating the conditions to be able to do all these other things together.”

Furthermore, Rubio’s comments reflect a broader commitment to strengthening economic ties, which have been a focal point of bilateral discussions over recent years.

Strengthening Strategic Partnerships

In discussions of strategic alliances, Rubio underscored India’s status as one of America’s key partners. He noted that the relationship has strengthened significantly due to shared interests and mutual global challenges. “We have a handful of really important strategic alliances. And India is one of them,” he remarked.

To further solidify this alliance, Rubio met with Prime Minister Narendra Modi and External Affairs Minister S. Jaishankar during his visit. He reiterated Washington’s desire to continue developing this partnership in response to evolving geopolitical dynamics.

Additionally, Rubio hinted at a potential separate visit by Prime Minister Modi to the United States for a bilateral meeting, apart from the upcoming G20 summit. He stated that Modi had shown interest in such a visit, and both sides would manage to coordinate the timing.

Emphasis on Quad Cooperation and Supply Chains

Rubio also addressed the importance of strengthening the Quad partnership, which includes India, the United States, Japan, and Australia. He highlighted maritime security and critical minerals supply chains as vital areas for collaboration among the four nations.

During his comments, he mentioned that the Quad should not just serve as a platform for occasional meetings among like-minded countries but should evolve into a forum for actionable partnerships. He indicated there is significant interest in addressing issues related to critical minerals and enhancing supply chain resilience across the member countries.

Rubio concluded by expressing hope that Quad leaders would convene later in the year, expecting to unveil specific deliverables aimed at strengthening their collective efforts in these key areas.
