Man Dies After Falling From Train in Bengal, Passengers Claim Emergency Chain Malfunction

The CSR Journal Magazine

A 24-year-old man from Jharkhand, identified as Chandan Kumar Mandal, died after he fell from a moving train in the Jalpaiguri district of West Bengal early on Sunday, April 27, 2026. The tragedy unfolded around 6:20 am when Mandal, travelling on the Brahmaputra Mail, allegedly fell from the train near Raninagar station while accompanied by his sister.

Following the incident, Railway Protection Force (RPF) and Government Railway Police (GRP) personnel responded to the scene and found Mandal on the tracks. He was subsequently transported to the Jalpaiguri Super Speciality Hospital, where he was declared dead by medical staff. After the postmortem procedures were completed, his body was returned to his family.

Eyewitness Accounts and Allegations

Co-passengers have raised concerns regarding the failure of the emergency chain, stating that they attempted to halt the train in response to the unfolding situation. A video circulated on social media reportedly shows passengers pulling the emergency chain but the train did not stop. It also depicts Mandal’s sister seeking help from fellow passengers as she expressed her distress.

Online reactions to this footage have highlighted ongoing issues regarding passenger safety and the effectiveness of emergency response systems on trains. Many social media users have voiced their concerns about the adequacy of protocols in such emergencies and the perceived lack of support from railway authorities during critical situations.

Despite these allegations, railway officials have refuted claims about the emergency chain being activated. The RPF inspector at Jalpaiguri Road station asserted that the train would have stopped if the emergency chain had been pulled. He stated the agency was informed of a man on the tracks and responded promptly.

Ongoing Investigations

The GRP has initiated an investigation into the incident. Mahadev Roy, the investigating officer, confirmed that Mandal was travelling with his sister but noted that no formal complaint had been lodged by the family with either the GRP or RPF. An Unnatural Death case has been registered to examine the circumstances surrounding the fall.

Authorities have expressed their commitment to thoroughly investigate the incident to determine the exact sequence of events. The responses from railway personnel and the ongoing inquiry aim to clarify any misunderstandings related to the emergency protocols that were reportedly not activated during this tragic event.

The incident serves as a reminder of the need for improved safety measures and responsive actions by railway personnel, especially in emergencies. As authorities continue their investigations, the outcome may shed light on the effectiveness of current protocols and whether any changes are required to enhance passenger safety on the railways.
