Mamata calls emergency meet at Kalighat as KMC tensions rise after poll setback

The CSR Journal Magazine
Amid growing political uncertainty following the recent Assembly election results, former Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee and Trinamool Congress General Secretary Abhishek Banerjee have stepped in to directly address unease within the Kolkata Municipal Corporation (KMC).

An emergency meeting of all TMC councillors has been convened at Kalighat on Friday at 4:00 pm.

According to party sources, attendance has been made virtually mandatory, signalling the seriousness of the situation. The leadership is expected to gauge the internal mood, address grievances, and prevent any potential cracks within the civic body.

Emergency meeting signals damage control

The urgency of the meeting comes amid rising speculation over internal dissent and fears of a possible split among councillors. These concerns have intensified after the party’s loss of power at Nabanna, the state secretariat, with its ripple effects now being felt within the KMC.

The Kalighat meeting is being viewed as a crucial attempt by the top leadership to stabilise the organisation at the grassroots level and reinforce party unity.

Adding to the political intrigue, the KMC’s scheduled monthly session, which was to be held on Friday, has been postponed indefinitely. The sudden move has fuelled speculation that the ruling camp may be seeking to avoid a formal platform where dissent could surface publicly.

Strong majority, but growing concerns

Despite the TMC’s commanding majority in the KMC—holding 137 out of 144 wards—recent electoral trends have raised alarm within the party. Post-election analyses suggest that several councillors failed to deliver expected leads in their respective areas, while the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) has reportedly made notable gains in key pockets.

Political observers believe these shifting dynamics have contributed to anxiety within sections of the party, with speculation that some councillors may consider switching allegiances.

Mayor’s future under speculation

Further complicating the situation are unconfirmed reports regarding the possible resignation of Kolkata Mayor Firhad Hakim. While no official statement has been made, the rumours have added to the tension within party circles.

As the situation unfolds, Friday’s meeting at Kalighat is expected to be pivotal. The messaging from Mamata Banerjee and Abhishek Banerjee, their ability to contain dissent, and any clarity on leadership within the KMC could significantly shape the next phase of Kolkata’s municipal politics.
