Malaysia and India Condemn Cross-Border Terrorism

The CSR Journal Magazine

Malaysia has joined India in a robust condemnation of cross-border terrorism, emphasizing a shared understanding on this crucial issue. Prime Minister Narendra Modi expressed this sentiment following a bilateral meeting with Malaysian Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim. Modi stated that the collective message from both nations is unequivocal: there will be no double standards or compromises when addressing terrorism.

Agreements and Collaborations

During Modi’s visit to Malaysia, nearly a dozen agreements were concluded, laying the groundwork for enhanced cooperation in various fields. These areas include defense and security, semiconductor technology, social security for Indian expatriate workers, UN peacekeeping initiatives, disaster management, and anti-corruption efforts. Notably, the latest joint statement specifically highlighted cross-border terrorism, a term utilized to address terrorism backed by Pakistan, indicating a strategic alignment between the two countries.

Commitment to Counterterrorism

The joint statement reaffirmed a commitment to enhance both bilateral and multilateral collaboration in countering terrorism. This includes cooperation within the frameworks of the United Nations and the Financial Action Task Force, alongside efforts to combat radicalization and violent extremism. Modi emphasized the importance of the burgeoning friendship between India and Malaysia, especially in the context of the current global uncertainties. He acknowledged Ibrahim’s strong denunciation of recent terrorist incidents, including the Pahalgam attack and the blast at the Red Fort.

Ongoing Legal Issues and Extradition Talks

Although there was no formal announcement regarding the extradition of fugitive Zakir Naik during the discussions, sources indicated that India continues to engage with Malaysia to resolve legal matters pertaining to this request.

Economic Opportunities and Strategic Partnership

Modi and Ibrahim also participated in a CEO Forum, aimed at unlocking new possibilities for trade and investment. Modi spoke about advancing collaboration in sectors such as artificial intelligence, digital technologies, semiconductors, health, and food security. He noted that both nations are committed to fostering economic transformation driven by strategic trust.

Strengthening Defence Relations

The joint statement recognized the strong defense ties between India and Malaysia, characterized by frequent exchanges, visits, staff discussions, exercises, training programs, and collaboration in the defense industry. Though not explicitly mentioned in the joint announcement, India is reportedly considering the sale of Dornier aircraft to Malaysia, as well as supplying naval platforms from its shipyards.

Maritime Cooperation Initiatives

The leaders encouraged the expansion of maritime cooperation, including regular goodwill visits and operational deployments, to strengthen bilateral relations further. As both countries move forward, there is a clear intention to enhance their strategic partnership, particularly in the realms of security and economic cooperation.
