Tensions prevailed in Hyderabad on Thursday as polytechnic students blocked a road to protest against G.O. Ms. No. 97, which proposes bringing government polytechnic colleges under the Young India Skills University framework.

Students of the Government Institute of Leather Technology in Raidurgam raised slogans against the proposed move, demanding clarity from the government on the future of polytechnic education, diploma courses and their career prospects.

Students Oppose Proposed Shift To YISU

The protesters said they were opposed to the proposed integration of government polytechnic colleges with Young India Skills University, arguing that the move could affect the existing academic system and opportunities available to diploma students.

The students demanded that polytechnic education continue under the State Board of Technical Education and Training and the Education Department.

They said the government must provide clear assurances about how the proposed changes would affect students and the future structure of polytechnic education.

The protest centred on concerns that bringing government polytechnic colleges under the YISU framework could alter the existing system of technical and diploma education.

Road Blockade Disrupts Traffic In Raidurgam

Students gathered on the Raidurgam road and staged a blockade, disrupting traffic in the area.

Police personnel reached the site and asked the protesters to clear the road and disperse.

However, the students refused to vacate the protest site, following which police detained several protesters.

Students Allege Manhandling During Detentions

The protesters alleged that some students, including women students, were manhandled by police during the action to clear the road.

The students said they would continue their agitation until the government withdrew G.O. 97 and issued clear assurances about the future of polytechnic education.

The agitation reflects growing concern among diploma students over the proposed transfer of government polytechnic colleges to the Young India Skills University framework.
