Madhya Pradesh Government Challenges Bail Granted to Twisha Sharma’s Mother-in-Law

The CSR Journal Magazine

The Madhya Pradesh government has initiated legal proceedings to contest the anticipatory bail granted to Giribala Singh, the mother-in-law of Twisha Sharma. Twisha, aged 33, was discovered deceased at her marital residence in Bhopal on May 12. Solicitor General Tushar Mehta is set to represent the state government during the hearing scheduled for today at 2:30 pm.

This hearing coincides with the state’s recommendation for a Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) inquiry into Twisha’s death. The government has also consented to transfer the ongoing investigation to the CBI, which is noted for handling cases of significant public interest.

Family of the Deceased Takes Legal Steps

Meanwhile, Twisha Sharma’s family has approached the Madhya Pradesh High Court to oppose the anticipatory bail application of her husband, Samarth Singh. A hearing for this matter is earmarked for Saturday, following a previous rejection of Samarth’s bail plea by the Bhopal district court.

The legal counsel representing Twisha’s family, Ankur Pandey, has presented WhatsApp correspondences between Twisha and Giribala Singh as crucial evidence of alleged mistreatment. He articulated that these chats reveal Twisha allegedly endured both mental and physical harassment during her marriage.

Pandey further raised concerns regarding the swift issuance of the anticipatory bail for Giribala Singh, which he claimed was granted within hours of the filing of the First Information Report (FIR). He argued that this prompt action suggests a potential misuse of influence by Giribala Singh.

Additionally, Twisha’s family may petition for a re-examination of her body, believing that this could yield more answers regarding the circumstances of her death.

Potential Employment Consequences for Giribala Singh

Giribala Singh is also facing potential repercussions concerning her role as president of the Bhopal District Consumer Commission. The state government has begun communications regarding her position and the possibility of her resignation from office.

The consumer commission operates under the Food and Civil Supplies Department, and serious allegations can lead to disciplinary actions, including mandatory resignation or removal from the position.

Ongoing Investigation and Search for Samarth Singh

Authorities have issued a lookout notice for Samarth Singh, who has been evading arrest since Twisha’s demise. Police units are actively searching across Madhya Pradesh and neighbouring states to locate him.

A financial reward of Rs 30,000 has been announced for information leading to Samarth’s capture. Bhopal Police Commissioner Sanjay Kumar acknowledged the challenges involved in apprehending individuals like Samarth but expressed optimism about the eventual arrest.

The timeline of events surrounding Twisha’s passing reveals that she was found hanging at her residence in the Katara Hills area of Bhopal. While her family has accused her in-laws of dowry harassment and abetment to suicide, the Singh family has countered these claims, alleging that Twisha was struggling with drug addiction. The post-mortem report determined that Twisha’s death was by suicide, a conclusion that her family has contested, asserting suspicions of foul play. Police have registered an FIR under several provisions, including aspects of the Dowry Prohibition Act, against Giribala Singh and Samarth Singh.
