On July 21, the Lok Sabha and Rajya Sabha faced several adjournments due to fervent protests from Opposition members regarding the NEET paper leak and issues affecting students. Allegations concerning embezzlement in the Ram Mandir donation trust added to the tensions, prompting vocal outbursts against the government. Members of the Opposition accused the government of failing to address the challenges faced by students.

Protests unfolded both inside and outside Parliament, with demonstrators demanding the resignation of Education Minister Dharmendra Pradhan. The unrest is expected to persist into the next day as Opposition leaders plan to coordinate their strategies. A meeting is scheduled for Tuesday at 10 am, hosted by Rajya Sabha Leader of Opposition Mallikarjun Kharge.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi, on the eve of the session, had highlighted various achievements of the nation, ostensibly attempting to shift focus from pressing issues. He expressed pride in India’s advancements in the space sector, particularly following a recent milestone by a private space startup. His remarks were met with criticism from Opposition leaders, who accused him of sidestepping critical topics.

Government Under Scrutiny for Handling of Key Issues

Kharge’s remarks were pointed, questioning Modi’s credibility and accusing the government of contributing to student distress. He specifically referenced the NEET exam situation and connected it to broader issues of accountability within the government. Kharge questioned the efficiency of governmental operations concerning students’ welfare.

The monsoon session is set to continue until August 13, during which the Lok Sabha commenced with a moment of silence for former members who recently passed away. This included tributes to significant figures such as Nadendla Bhaskara Rao and Sheikh Hamad bin Khalifa Al-Thani, Father Amir of Qatar. However, following the obituary references, discussion quickly turned back to pressing demands from the Opposition.

Speaker Om Birla’s attempts to maintain order were met with obstacles as he repeatedly called for cooperation from members. Eventually, the House was adjourned until noon amid ongoing unrest. During this time, Union Law Minister Arjun Ram Meghwal introduced a Bill aimed at increasing the number of Supreme Court judges from 33 to 37, a move overshadowed by the protests.

Continued Opposition Agitation and Government Response

In the Rajya Sabha, tributes were also paid to deceased members, and newly-elected officials took their oaths. The atmosphere, however, was quickly disrupted when Kharge attempted to raise concerns about the NEET paper leak and the ongoing protests in Delhi. He highlighted the large gatherings of students and the alleged violent response from police forces, demanding accountability from the government.

Chairman CP Radhakrishnan remarked on the importance of the session and urged members to maintain dignity and decorum. He mentioned new provisions for live AI-based interpretation of proceedings in various languages, aiming to enhance accessibility during discussions. Despite calls for serious discourse, tensions remained high.

Throughout the day, Congress leaders continued to critique the government’s approach towards student-related issues. Party leader KC Venugopal pressed for discussions concerning millions of affected students and reiterated their demand for Minister Pradhan’s resignation. Additionally, Priyanka Gandhi Vadra condemned police actions against students, while Samajwadi Party leader Akhilesh Yadav criticised the government for neglecting student concerns.

In a show of willingness to engage, Union Health Minister and Leader of the House in the Rajya Sabha, JP Nadda, met with representatives from the Cockroach Janata Party later in the day. Discussions included calls for accountability and support for families affected by NEET controversies. Nadda appealed for the cessation of protests, but activists expressed intentions to remain mobilised until satisfactory resolutions were achieved, keeping the discourse alive in Parliament.
