The recent comments from Communist Party of India-Marxist (CPI-M) MP John Brittas emphasise the need for Union Home Minister Amit Shah to appear in Parliament. Brittas called for Shah to respond to the Opposition’s inquiries concerning the alleged police actions taken against students during their protests at Jantar Mantar. This statement came in light of criticisms regarding the Home Minister’s absence from Parliament.

Brittas voiced that Shah should be held accountable for the purported police brutality against the students. He further stated, “If Amit Shah was not aware of the firing or the brutal assault that has taken place on the students, then he is incapable of heading the Delhi police. If he was aware and deeply involved with it, he is also a culprit.” This underscores the serious implications of Shah’s role during the incidents.

Moreover, Brittas stressed that it is essential for Shah to address these concerns in Parliament. He emphasised the importance of accountability at the highest levels, as the situation surrounding the protests has raised critical questions about law enforcement’s conduct in the capital.

Criticism of the Public Examinations Amendment Bill

In addition to matters of police accountability, Brittas commented on the Public Examinations (Prevention of Unfair Means) Amendment Bill, 2026, expressing doubt over its potential effectiveness. He stated that merely passing the legislation would not resolve the deeper issues present in the examination system. “We are of the opinion that merely passing legislation will not help to mitigate or solve the situation. The entire edifice, the structure on which these written examinations are set, is corrupt, inefficient, and lacks transparency,” he remarked.

Brittas called for comprehensive reforms to the examination system, arguing that superficial changes would fail to address the root problems. He urged the government to pursue a more substantial restructuring of the examination process, highlighting the need for transparency and efficiency to restore faith in academic assessments.

While expressing intent to discuss the Bill, Brittas cautioned against the government’s attempts to create the appearance of action, calling it a “camouflage” of the underlying issues that plague the current examination framework.

Response from the Bharatiya Janata Party

In response to the criticisms from the Opposition, BJP MP Rahul Sinha defended the government’s stance on examination irregularities and shifted the focus onto the Congress party. He noted that Congress-held states had experienced their own issues with examination paper leaks and argued that the party lacked the credibility to challenge the current government on this matter.

Sinha stated, “In Congress-ruled states where question papers were leaked, they should have first sought the resignations of the education ministers, but they did not do so.” He reiterated that the Congress Party had previously overseen numerous examination leaks, questioning their right to express concerns regarding the current situation.

Furthermore, Sinha praised Prime Minister Narendra Modi, asserting that he has effectively understood and engaged with student concerns, citing that students concluded their protests after receiving a direct appeal from him. Sinha expressed the view that the students have greater trust in the Prime Minister compared to opposition leaders like Rahul Gandhi.
