Uber India has introduced a complimentary transportation scheme for voters in the Ernakulam and Thiruvananthapuram districts in conjunction with the upcoming Keralam legislative assembly elections, scheduled for April 9. This initiative is rolled out in partnership with the Chief Electoral Officer’s Office, aiming to facilitate increased voter turnout by addressing transportation challenges.

According to the Chief Electoral Officer, voters can utilize free rides across the Car, Auto, and Bike categories through the Uber app, which now features the locations of all polling booths for effortless navigation. Rides will be complimentary for distances up to two kilometers from the pickup point. For journeys exceeding this distance, voters will be required to pay the standard fare determined by Uber for the extra kilometers traveled.

Details of the Legislative Assembly Election

The Election Commission of India announced on March 15 that the Keralam legislative assembly elections will be conducted in a single phase on April 9, with vote counting scheduled for May 4. The current assembly’s term is expected to end on May 23. This election is pivotal as the BJP-led National Democratic Alliance aims to unseat the ruling Left Democratic Front, which has been in power for nearly a decade under the leadership of Chief Minister Pinarayi Vijayan.

During the previous assembly elections held on April 6, 2021, results were declared on May 2, 2021. The Left Democratic Front successfully retained its position, securing 99 seats and marking a significant milestone as it became the first ruling alliance since 1977 to achieve consecutive terms in the state. The United Democratic Front managed to win 41 seats, while the NDA experienced a decline, losing its sole seat in the assembly.

Historical Election Context

In the 2021 elections, the Left Democratic Front garnered 41.5 percent of the total vote share, significantly ahead of the United Democratic Front, which received 38.4 percent. The National Democratic Alliance, led by the Bharatiya Janata Party, obtained only 11.4 percent, failing to secure any assembly seats. The results illustrated a notable divide, with the Communist Party of India (Marxist) emerging as the largest party with 62 seats and a 25.5 percent vote share.

The Indian National Congress, part of the United Democratic Front, won 21 seats with a comparable vote share of 25.2 percent. The Communist Party of India succeeded in gaining 17 seats, while the Indian Union Muslim League, an important UDF ally, secured 15 seats. Following the victory in 2021, Chief Minister Pinarayi Vijayan was recognized as the first Chief Minister in Kerala to be re-elected after completing a full five-year term.
