The CSR Journal Magazine

A tragic occurrence unfolded in Belagavi, Karnataka, where a woman lost her life while trying to save her son from drowning. The incident happened on the evening of April 23, 2023, near the Hiranyakeshi River, located on the outskirts of Sankeshwar. Authorities are currently engaged in search efforts for the woman’s son, who is presumed to have drowned.

The deceased has been identified as 27-year-old Laxmi Sudhakar Kutoli, a resident of Hanuman Nagar in Sankeshwar. Reports indicate that her son ventured into the river to swim but unfortunately began to struggle in deeper water. In a desperate attempt to rescue him, Laxmi jumped into the river, only to be swept away as well.

As of the afternoon of April 24, the boy’s body had not been located. Local authorities, including the Belagavi Police, have initiated comprehensive search operations to find him. The situation has resulted in considerable distress within the community, and investigations are ongoing to determine the circumstances surrounding this unfortunate event.

Previous Incident in Vijayapura

This recent incident follows another tragic drowning that occurred earlier on April 8, 2023, at Bhutnal Lake in Vijayapura. In this case, three individuals, including a minor, lost their lives during a family outing. The victims were identified as twelve-year-old Mohammed Hayat, along with 32-year-old Haider Pasha and 35-year-old Abdul Quddus, all residents of RT Nagar in Bengaluru.

The group had travelled to Vijayapura as part of a family trip, which turned tragic when Mohammed Hayat entered the lake and started to drown. In their effort to save him, both Haider Pasha and Abdul Quddus jumped into the water. Sadly, all three individuals were swept under by the strong currents and drowned.

Emergency personnel, including the fire brigade and local police from the Adarsh Nagar Police Station, responded promptly after being informed of the situation. They worked to recover the bodies of the victims from the lake. Mohammed Hayat and Haider Pasha were pronounced dead at the scene, while Abdul Quddus was critically injured and later succumbed while being transported to a medical facility.

Ongoing Investigation Efforts

The Belagavi Police are continuing their investigation into the recent drowning incident involving Laxmi Sudhakar Kutoli and her son. Authorities have indicated that they are taking all necessary steps to locate the missing child, while also gathering details about the circumstances that led to this crisis.

The community is rallying around the families affected by both tragedies, expressing genuine sorrow and concern. The authorities have emphasised the need for heightened awareness regarding water safety, particularly in natural bodies of water where swimming can pose significant risks.

As families and local residents process these events, calls for improved safety measures at popular recreation sites may emerge. Investigators are expected to release more information in the coming days as efforts to locate the missing son continue and as the community seeks to support those who have suffered significant loss.
