Seven-Year-Old Drowns in Ghaziabad Waterlogged Pit Following Rain

The CSR Journal Magazine

Ghaziabad has recently experienced severe heavy rainfall, which has led to major disruptions and the deaths of two children in separate drowning incidents within a 24-hour period. The latest incident occurred on Friday when a seven-year-old boy, identified as Polu, drowned in a pit filled with rainwater near Loni. This tragedy comes just one day after a three-year-old girl lost her life in a similar circumstance in the city.

Polu lived with his family in a slum settlement close to Milak village, located under the jurisdiction of the Ankur Vihar police station. According to police reports, he had been missing since Thursday evening, prompting an overnight search by his family. His body was recovered on Friday afternoon from a rainwater-filled pit, which had allegedly been excavated for road construction. Medical personnel at a nearby hospital pronounced him dead shortly after.

The community has expressed outrage over the construction pit, which they claim has become a dangerous hazard due to the recent rain, creating a situation that has proven fatal for a child. This incident has led to heightened concerns regarding public safety, especially during the monsoon season.

Previous Drowning Incident Raises Alarms

This recent drowning is particularly alarming as it occurred just one day after another tragedy in the Vijay Nagar area of Ghaziabad. There, a three-year-old girl reportedly drowned after slipping into accumulated rainwater outside her home. Residents responded with protests, arguing that poor drainage systems and negligence from local authorities contributed to this tragic event.

The deaths of these two young children have intensified discussions around the risks associated with heavy rainfall in Ghaziabad and the surrounding National Capital Region (NCR). The continuous downpour has resulted in significant waterlogging across numerous areas, hampering traffic and disrupting daily life.

In addition to the drownings, persistent rain has caused a road collapse in Ghaziabad’s Vasundhara Sector, leading to damage to parked vehicles. Fortunately, no injuries were reported from this incident, but it underscores the broader issues stemming from the heavy rainfall.

Authorities Under Pressure for Immediate Response

The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has projected that heavy rainfall will continue over parts of Delhi-NCR in the days ahead. With forecasts indicating further rain, residents are calling on local authorities to take immediate action. Many are urging improvements to drainage systems, the securing of open construction sites, and proactive measures to prevent any additional tragedies during this monsoon season.

Community sentiment reflects a strong desire for enhanced public safety, particularly as the rainy season continues. Given recent events, there is a growing recognition that addressing these infrastructural issues is vital in preventing similar incidents in the future.

As investigations into the two drowning incidents unfold, both the local community and authorities are grappling with the consequences of the ongoing monsoon and the urgent need for safety measures. The current situation serves as a critical reminder of the vulnerabilities that arise during extreme weather conditions.
