K-Pop Stars Shine at Met Gala 2026, Spotlighting Korean and Indian Fashion

The CSR Journal Magazine

The Met Gala 2026, held at the Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York City on May 5, showcased its theme ‘Fashion Is Art’. Korean pop sensation Karina, the lead singer of the girl group Aespa, made a notable entrance in a custom-made Prada outfit. Her dress, composed of white satin paired with a striking black cape, drew from Prada’s archives and incorporated design elements from past collections.

Karina’s attire featured a tablier neckline that subtly hinted at the traditional hanbok, signifying Korea’s rich cultural heritage dating back to the Three Kingdoms period. The design prioritised restraint, omitting elaborate embroidery or prints, thereby focusing solely on the silhouette. This approach positioned her expression of Korean identity within the design rather than as a decorative element.

Karina’s controlled presentation stood in contrast to the theatricality typically encouraged at such events, suggesting a deeper understanding and integration of her cultural roots in her fashion choices.

EJAE Integrates Korean and Western Symbols

EJAE, vocalist from K-Pop Demon Hunters, adopted a conceptual approach to her Met Gala appearance. Her ensemble was inspired by the familiar imagery of Venus, the Western symbol of beauty, and was intended to be balanced by the elegance of the gisaeng from Korea’s Joseon dynasty, known for their artistic professions.

She donned a silver gown designed by Swarovski, which blended neoclassical aesthetics with elements of Korean craftsmanship. The brand described her look as capturing the essence of crystal purity within a couture framework. Rather than visually merging the two cultural references, EJAE’s outfit conveyed a deeper narrative, drawing connections between classical Western art and Korean cultural history.

This sartorial strategy placed both Korean and Western archetypes on an equal platform, thus challenging traditional notions of costume through insightful design choices.

K-Pop’s Growing Influence at Major Fashion Events

The presence of K-Pop stars at the Met Gala underscored a significant evolution in the global fashion landscape. Lisa, a prominent member of BLACKPINK and part of the Met Gala Host Committee, indicated that Korean artists are transitioning from attendees to influential figures in the fashion domain. This year also saw a united appearance from all four BLACKPINK members, marking a unique milestone.

Jisoo graced the event in a custom Dior gown adorned with intricate, art-inspired embroidery, while Jennie maintained her partnership with Chanel, featuring a metallic-embroidered strapless look. Rose opted for a minimalist Saint Laurent design, and Lisa turned heads in a sculptural white ensemble with innovative 3D details.

The cultural dialogue extended beyond Korean representation. Indian artistry also had a notable presence, with SZA showcasing a gown that incorporated saree remnants and traditional hand-embroidered details. Additionally, Rachel Zegler donned a Prabal Gurung outfit that echoed the fluidity of Indian textiles, while Camila Mendes showcased a design featuring scarf details from Manish Malhotra.

Indian representation was particularly strong this year, marked by the debut appearance of Karan Johar alongside Jaipur royalty Gauravi Kumari and Sawai Padmanabh Singh. Regular attendees included notable figures like Isha Ambani and Natasha Poonawalla, highlighting the increasing influence of Indian fashion on the global stage.
