Italy Will Not Respond to Trump’s Attacks on PM Giorgia Meloni

The CSR Journal Magazine

Italy has decided not to further engage in the dispute sparked by US President Donald Trump’s recent comments about Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni. Italian ministers have stated their commitment to maintaining a positive bilateral relationship amid growing tensions. This decision comes after a series of accusations exchanged between the two leaders that have strained diplomatic ties.

Meloni was previously viewed as a close ally of Trump, having attended his inauguration in 2025. However, relations deteriorated recently when Trump claimed in an interview with Italian television that Meloni had “begged” him for a photo during a G7 summit in France. Meloni has denied these claims, alleging that Trump fabricated the story.

In light of their upcoming participation in the NATO summit in Ankara, the situation became more complicated when Trump posted a photograph of Meloni along with a provocative caption on his social media platform, Truth Social. This action has raised concerns regarding potential tensions among allies as they convene for the important NATO conference.

Italian Officials Respond to Provocation

Foreign Minister Antonio Tajani expressed Rome’s intention to resist provocations and underscored the importance of the US-Italy relationship, irrespective of the presidency. In an interview, he said, “Trump speaks for himself. We have a US president who loves to provoke, especially on social media. We have decided to stop responding to these remarks.” His comments highlight the government’s focus on diplomatic decorum over retaliatory rhetoric.

Defence Minister Guido Crosetto echoed this sentiment when queried about a response to Trump’s remarks. Other senior officials also aligned themselves with the government’s stance of not escalating the situation. In contrast, Meloni’s office has not commented on her expected demeanour during her meeting with Trump in Ankara.

A source close to Meloni indicated she would not consider snubbing Trump but would greet him warmly. The source affirmed that she is adept at managing delicate interpersonal relations and would likely approach the meeting with a positive attitude. This response may serve to defuse any hostilities that arose from recent exchanges.

Impact of the Recent Diplomatic Tensions

Meloni’s criticism of Trump’s comments regarding Pope Leo this year has added another layer to the diplomatic complexities. Following her remarks, Trump retaliated, accusing Meloni of lacking courage. This public confrontation has sparked speculation among Italian media regarding a possible boycott of the traditional US Independence Day celebrations. However, in an effort to demonstrate goodwill, several high-ranking Italian officials attended the celebration at the American ambassador’s residence in Rome last week.

Trump’s comments have not only received backlash from government officials but have also drawn strong reactions from opposition parties within Italy. Some opponents have expressed solidarity with Meloni, underscoring a shared sentiment against the US president’s remarks.

Additionally, Italy’s Il Foglio newspaper responded to the controversy by featuring a satirical front-page image juxtaposing Trump with Russian President Vladimir Putin, accompanying it with the same provocative caption used by Trump. This illustrates the heightened tensions and the domestic narrative surrounding the relationship between the two nations.
