‘It Feels Unreal’: Vaibhav Sooryavanshi on Wearing India Jersey for First Time

India’s teenage batting sensation Vaibhav Sooryavanshi said he found it difficult to describe the emotions he experienced after seeing his name on an India jersey for the first time, calling it the fulfilment of a childhood dream.

The 15-year-old, who has received his maiden call-up for India’s upcoming T20I tour of Ireland and England, shared his reaction in a video released by the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI), saying the moment felt surreal.

‘I Couldn’t Stop Smiling’

Reflecting on his journey, Sooryavanshi said representing India had always been the reason he first picked up a cricket bat.

“It’s difficult to express in words. The reason I first picked up a bat and started practising at a cricket ground was to one day wear the India jersey, and that dream has come true today. It feels unreal,” Sooryavanshi said.

The left-hander admitted that he struggled to process the moment when he first saw the jersey.

“I simply cannot explain this feeling in words. It feels like a dream. The moment I saw the jersey, I was so happy. I couldn’t stop smiling. Sometimes, things happen in your life that you never even imagine, and when they do, you are unable to react. That was exactly my reaction,” he added.

Tour of Ireland and England Awaits

Sooryavanshi has been included in India’s squad for seven T20 internationals in the United Kingdom.

The tour comprises two matches against Ireland and a five-match series against England, beginning in Belfast on June 26.

His selection comes after a remarkable run of performances that have established him as one of India’s brightest young prospects.

Record-Breaking Form Continues

The teenager heads into the series after a sensational performance for India A in the final of the recent tri-series.

He struck 94 runs off just 29 deliveries and set a new List A record for the fastest half-century, reaching the milestone in only 11 balls.

His explosive innings helped India secure a 66-run victory in the title clash.

Earlier this year, Sooryavanshi played a starring role in the Under-19 World Cup final against England, smashing 175 off 80 balls with the help of 15 fours and 15 sixes.

The innings remains the highest individual score in the history of an Under-19 World Cup final and helped India lift the title.

Big-Match Performances Raise Expectations

Sooryavanshi also carried his rich form into the Indian Premier League, where he emerged as a key player in Rajasthan Royals’ run to the playoffs.

In the Eliminator against Sunrisers Hyderabad, he blasted 97 off 29 balls to guide Rajasthan Royals to victory.

He followed that up with another match-winning effort, scoring 96 off 47 deliveries against Gujarat Titans in Qualifier 2.

Across the Under-19 World Cup final, the IPL Eliminator, IPL Qualifier 2 and the India A tri-series final, Sooryavanshi has amassed 462 runs from only 185 deliveries at a strike rate of 249.73.

Many of those innings came in high-pressure encounters involving knockout qualification or title-deciding matches.

Now, with an India jersey in hand and international cricket on the horizon, the 15-year-old is preparing for the next chapter in a journey that has already captured the imagination of cricket fans across the country.
