Israel Requests India to Label Iran’s IRGC as Terrorist Organisation

The CSR Journal Magazine

Senior officials from Israel have formally approached India, requesting that the country classify Iran’s Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC) as a terrorist organisation. This appeal comes against the backdrop of ongoing regional tensions and a delicate ceasefire with Iran. The discussions took place in Jerusalem where Israeli representatives conveyed their concerns to Indian counterparts.

During these interactions, officials from Israel’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs emphasised that the perceived threat posed by the IRGC extends beyond the borders of West Asia. They indicated that Israel has repeatedly raised these matters with New Delhi, highlighting the IRGC’s expanding influence at both regional and global levels.

According to Israeli officials, various countries have already implemented measures against the IRGC, and they expressed a strong expectation that India would contemplate similar actions. The officials have shared assessments with Indian diplomats regarding the activities of the Iranian military entity in prior meetings.

Global Trends in Sanctions Against IRGC

Israeli representatives referenced recent actions taken by nations such as Australia and certain members of the European Union. These countries have imposed sanctions tied to the IRGC, reinforcing the claim that concerns associated with the organisation have evolved into a broader global security issue.

As the situation develops, the significance of these discussions grows, particularly given India’s strategic relationships with both Israel and Iran. Notably, earlier this month, Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi visited India, articulating that India-Iran ties are robust and enduring.

Israeli officials further suggested that the IRGC plays a pivotal role in ongoing geopolitical tensions involving Iran, Israel, and the United States. They noted that a fragile ceasefire has been in place since April, following intense military escalations that have notably affected international markets and energy routes.

Concerns Over Regional Security Dynamics

Israeli authorities maintain that diminishing the power of the IRGC is a fundamental strategic aim of their military operations and diplomatic initiatives directed towards Iran. The ongoing dialogue underscores the complex nature of India’s foreign policy as it strives to balance its relationships with both Israel and Iran.

As tensions continue to simmer in the region, the Israeli appeal for India to take action against the IRGC may shape future bilateral discussions. The resultant decisions from New Delhi are awaited with keen interest by international observers, particularly given the implications for regional security and international diplomacy.
