Israel Intensifies Operations Against Hezbollah with Over 150 Strikes

The CSR Journal Magazine

The Israeli Defence Forces (IDF) have intensified their military operations against Hezbollah along the Israel-Lebanon border, resulting in over 150 strikes against Hezbollah positions within a span of 30 hours. This escalation is part of a broader campaign aimed at dismantling the Iran-supported militant group. The ongoing conflict commenced in October 2023, as Israel accused Hezbollah of violating ceasefire agreements repeatedly.

Israeli officials allege that there have been over 400 violations of ceasefire terms in recent weeks, encompassing rocket attacks, drone incursions, and infiltration attempts from southern Lebanon into northern Israel. The situation remains tense, with the sound of explosions and interceptor missiles frequently audible in the region.

As conflict escalates, the United States reportedly is advancing towards potential peace negotiations with Iran. However, Israel insists that any overarching regional peace agreement must include the disarmament of Hezbollah to ensure security in the area.

Hezbollah’s Military Preparedness and Israel’s Stance

Lt Col Sarit Zehavi, a former intelligence officer with the IDF, indicated that Hezbollah has been gearing up for a significant confrontation with Israel for an extended period. For nearly eleven months, Israel was primarily on the defensive, dealing with constant threats from Hezbollah’s attacks. She remarked that the shift to offensive operations was a significant development in the ongoing conflict.

According to Zehavi, residents in northern Israel are subjected to a constant threat of rocket and drone attacks. She described daily rocket barrages and the activation of the Iron Dome defence system as part of life in the region. The former officer emphasised that Israel is attempting to thwart an impending offensive that Hezbollah has allegedly been planning for years.

Rejecting claims of a stable ceasefire, she asserted that daily attacks persist, and the Lebanese government’s hesitance to confront Hezbollah exacerbates the situation. As a result, the dynamic between the two sides remains hostile, with little indication of any resolution in the foreseeable future.

Impact of the Conflict on Civilians and Infrastructure

Israel maintains that Hezbollah continues to manufacture and smuggle weapons into Lebanon via Syria while expanding its military capabilities within civilian-dense areas. Estimates suggest that Hezbollah retains around 50,000 operatives, despite suffering considerable losses during the ongoing military campaigns. Israeli sources claim to have neutralised approximately 3,000 Hezbollah fighters, although independent verification of these figures is challenging.

The former officer defended Israeli airstrikes targeting infrastructure within Lebanon, asserting that many civilian buildings are allegedly utilised for storing weaponry and launching attacks against Israel. She indicated that the suffering in Lebanon stems from Hezbollah’s reliance on populated areas for its operations.

As regional conditions continue to deteriorate, Israel has indicated a willingness to escalate its operations by targeting Hezbollah assets deeper within Beirut if hostilities persist. With diplomatic efforts related to Iran in motion, the conflict along the Israel-Lebanon border stands as one of the most precarious points in West Asia, highlighting the ongoing volatility in the region.
