Iran President Pezeshkian to Visit Islamabad for Talks on Ties and Region

The CSR Journal Magazine

Iranian President Masoud Pezeshkian is set to arrive in Islamabad on Tuesday for a one-day visit during which he will engage in discussions with senior Pakistani leaders regarding bilateral relations and regional matters. Pezeshkian will be joined by a high-level delegation as part of this diplomatic mission.

During the visit, Pezeshkian has scheduled meetings with President Asif Ali Zardari and Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif. Additionally, he is expected to meet with Deputy Prime Minister Ishaq Dar, the Senate chairman, and the National Assembly speaker. This visit marks Pezeshkian’s second trip to Pakistan since he assumed the presidency.

Official reports indicate that Pezeshkian departed for Islamabad aboard a special aircraft designated as “Minab 168.” This flight is intended as a tribute to the victims of US strikes in Iran, particularly honouring the memory of 168 students from the Minab school who lost their lives in these attacks.

Agenda and Objectives of the Meeting

In advance of his departure, President Pezeshkian articulated the purpose of his visit, stating it aims to ensure the full implementation of a memorandum in accordance with international law. He asserted that the agreement is vital for enhancing stability and security in West Asia, as reported by state-run Press TV.

On his social media platform X, Pezeshkian underscored that “the effectiveness of the talks depends on full commitment to the agreed obligations and their precise implementation.” He expressed that progress will be evaluated based on practical adherence to established responsibilities and cautioned that statements beyond the outlined agreements could hinder the negotiations.

The Foreign Office of Pakistan stated that the discussions would encompass a wide range of bilateral relations and seek new opportunities for cooperation in various sectors, including trade, energy, border security, and people-to-people exchanges. Furthermore, the visit presents a significant occasion to deliberate on ongoing diplomatic efforts following the signing of the Islamabad Memorandum of Understanding.

Context of Regional Developments

This visit follows recent negotiations between Iran and the United States that took place in Switzerland, where both parties reached a consensus on a roadmap to finalise a comprehensive agreement within 60 days. The discussions at the Lake Lucerne Summit, held on Sunday and Monday, are conducted under the auspices of the Islamabad Memorandum of Understanding, which was signed by the US and Iran to facilitate dialogues on regional security and other pressing issues.

In addition, Iranian Parliament Speaker and chief negotiator Mohammad Bagher Ghalibaf and Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi have engaged in high-level discussions in Oman concerning the management of the Strait of Hormuz. Pezeshkian’s visit to Islamabad will largely concentrate on fostering bilateral cooperation and building upon the ongoing diplomatic processes that are currently unfolding in the region.

This diplomatic engagement represents an effort to strengthen ties between Iran and Pakistan while navigating the complexities of regional security dynamics. The outcomes of this visit will be closely monitored by both regional and international observers as potential ramifications on broader geopolitical issues are evaluated.
