Iran Asserts Its Right to Secure Strait of Hormuz Amid Regional Tensions

The CSR Journal Magazine

Iran’s UN Ambassador Amir Saeid Iravani has emphasized that the country does not intend to obstruct the Strait of Hormuz, even as tensions escalate in the West Asia region. During a statement at a United Nations event, Iravani underscored Iran’s right to maintain peace and security in this vital waterway while reiterating the nation’s commitment to international maritime laws that uphold freedom of navigation.

“We are not going to close the Strait of Hormuz, but it is our inherent right to preserve peace and security in this waterway,” Iravani declared. He highlighted that Iran’s actions are not responsible for the prevailing situation in the Strait, which he referred to as being influenced by external factors. The ambassador asserted that Iran has no choice but to exercise its right to self-defense as stated in the UN Charter and international law.

In his remarks, Iravani pointed out that the ongoing challenges in the region, particularly in the Strait of Hormuz, are the direct result of what he termed the destabilizing activities of the United States. He emphasized that Iran’s reactions stem from these provocations, including perceived aggressions against the country and efforts that undermine regional stability.

Recently, Iran has reportedly increased restrictions on maritime traffic through the Strait amid continuing military actions involving the US and Israel. The Iranian government contends that vessels not aligned with the interests of the US and Israel can navigate the channel without obstruction, reinforcing its stance on regional security and navigation rights.

The Strait of Hormuz is a crucial maritime route, with over 20 million barrels of crude oil transiting through it daily. This volume accounts for approximately 20% of the world’s oil consumption and nearly 25% of all seaborne oil trade. Moreover, a significant proportion of the global liquefied natural gas supply also travels through this narrow channel, underscoring its importance to the global energy market.

Any disruption in the flow of vessels through the Strait can have far-reaching implications, affecting financial markets, supply chains, and consumer prices around the world. The ongoing instability in West Asia is contributing to challenges in energy supplies internationally, prompting several nations to seek alternative arrangements to secure their energy needs.
