International Day of Yoga Attracts 10,000 Participants in Times Square

The 12th International Day of Yoga saw thousands come together at Times Square in New York on Sunday. This day-long event was a celebration of yoga, organised by the Consulate General of India in New York, in collaboration with the Times Square Alliance. The occasion drew nearly 10,000 attendees from various nationalities, all participating under the theme “Yoga for Healthy Ageing”.

The programme included seven different yoga sessions, highlighting the immense enthusiasm for the practice across New York City and the wider United States, as noted by the Indian Consulate in an official statement. The gathering showcased a vibrant amalgamation of individuals unified in their appreciation for yoga.

Participants began arriving early in the morning, setting up their mats amid the bustling atmosphere of Times Square, a location renowned for its vibrant energy. Attendees included not only yoga enthusiasts but also members of various communities, indicating the event’s far-reaching impact.

Notable Attendees and Perspectives on Yoga

Among the distinguished attendees was Padmashri Guru Dr HR Nagendra, a celebrated yoga master and meditation expert, also known as Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s yoga guru. In his address to the participants, he emphasised the need to view yoga as both an ancient tradition and a practical discipline suitable for contemporary life. His remarks underscored the ongoing significance of yoga and meditation for fostering a healthy and balanced lifestyle.

Conveying his insights, Dr Nagendra urged the participants to incorporate yoga and meditation into their daily routines to enhance their quality of life. His emphasis on the transformative aspects of yoga resonated with many in attendance, illustrating the practice’s relevance in today’s society.

The Consul General of India in New York, Binaya Pradhan, also expressed his support for the event and remarked on the growing popularity of yoga in the United States. He noted that yoga has become an integral part of the everyday lives of many Americans and members of the Indian-American community, reinforcing the cultural exchange between India and the United States.

Preparatory Activities Leading to the Main Event

In anticipation of the main celebration, the Consulate General organised several outreach programmes and yoga sessions across their jurisdiction, which included New York, New Jersey, Delaware, Connecticut, Pennsylvania, and Ohio. These initiatives spanned approximately one month, fostering community engagement and awareness around yoga.

The month-long activities encouraged extensive participation from local communities and yoga practitioners, significantly contributing to the lead-up excitement for the Times Square event. The engagement highlighted a collective effort to deepen the appreciation for yoga ahead of the formal festivities, indicating a robust interest in health and wellness practices.
