Indian Tourists Can Now Skip Long Nepal Border Queues: Here’s How

The CSR Journal Magazine

Indian tourists planning a road trip to Nepal will find their journey significantly easier with the introduction of a new online registration system. This initiative allows travellers using private vehicles to bypass long waits at the border by obtaining necessary vehicle permits digitally from the comfort of their homes. Such changes are estimated to minimise waiting times and alleviate congestion at border crossing points.

Previously, entering Nepal by road required tourists to stop at customs checkpoints to procure temporary vehicle permits, which often resulted in extended waits due to large queues. This lengthy process involved cumbersome paperwork, frequently leading to traffic bottlenecks at the border. However, with the advent of the online system, individuals can now register their vehicle, fulfil fee payments, and acquire a QR code before commencing their journey.

Upon reaching the border, travellers can simply present this QR code, allowing them immediate access without any delays, thus enhancing the overall travel experience.

Permits and Renewals Made Convenient

The flexible nature of this new system is one of its key benefits. Travellers can conveniently apply for vehicle permits from their own locations and opt for online fee payment or transactions at designated bank counters. Once the process is complete, a QR code is generated for entry not only into Nepal but also for movement within the country.

In the event that a traveller wishes to prolong their stay, renewing the permit is now an online task that can be completed from within Nepal, eliminating the need to return to customs offices. Previously, overstaying would result in penalties, complicating the experience for tourists and adding frustration to their travels. The current arrangement aims to completely alleviate those concerns.

The new system’s launch was officiated by Dr Swarnim Wagle, Nepal’s Finance Minister, who stated that this initiative is part of broader efforts to enhance public service efficiency. He highlighted the system’s objective to offer tourists faster, simpler, and more effective services while also reducing the challenges faced at border areas.

Operational Dynamics of the New System

To utilise this service, travellers are instructed to visit the Customs Department’s website and select the Temporary Import Vehicle (TIV) option. There, they are required to enter vehicle and traveller details and proceed to pay the associated taxes or fees online. A QR code is then emailed to them, which must be shown at the border and during travel within Nepal.

This systematic approach is expected to streamline the entry process, addressing long-standing issues associated with delays at the borders. As officials have noted, the service aims to cater to a wide range of users, including Indian tourists with private vehicles, travellers from other countries entering via India, and visitors from neighbouring nations such as Bangladesh.

The initiative is part of the Nepal National Single Window System, which could potentially expand to accommodate greater numbers of travellers in the future, thus continuing to improve the overall travel experience for many.
