India Urges UN To Preserve Country-Led Approach In Global Development Efforts

The CSR Journal Magazine

In discussions at the UN Economic and Social Council (ECOSOC), India has underscored the necessity of maintaining the primacy of the United Nations’ development framework. This statement was made by Parvathaneni Harish, India’s Permanent Representative to the UN, during the Operational Activities for Development Segment.

Harish stressed that national ownership should remain central to all global development initiatives. He remarked that the ongoing dialogues concerning reforms to the UN Resident Coordinator system must focus on bolstering support aligned with countries’ specific development priorities.

He stated, “Any recalibration of the Resident Coordinator system should strengthen programme support to countries on the development pillar.” This statement underscores India’s intent to ensure that the UN’s operational structure effectively supports nation-specific goals.

Focus on Governance and Funding Challenges

During the discussions, Harish addressed governance and funding concerns associated with the UN Resident Coordinator system. He called for increased transparency and accountability within the system, noting that a comprehensive evaluation of its developmental impact is essential.

He asserted that these discussions should continue to shape future funding and governance arrangements. The Indian envoy’s comments reflect a proactive approach to addressing existing challenges within the UN framework.

Harish’s emphasis on transparency reveals a critical viewpoint on the mechanisms that govern international cooperation in development. By advocating for a thorough assessment, India seeks not only to improve the current system but also to ensure that it adapts to the evolving needs of member nations.

Commemoration of UN Peacekeepers

On May 30, prior to these discussions, India co-hosted a ceremony alongside Austria to commemorate the International Day of UN Peacekeepers. This event honoured nearly 4,000 peacekeepers who have made sacrifices under the UN banner, which includes 184 Indian personnel.

During the ceremony, Harish highlighted the bravery of these peacekeepers, specifically remembering 45 uniformed soldiers who lost their lives in the past year while fulfilling their duties. The solemn event served as a poignant reminder of the risks associated with peacekeeping missions.

The Permanent Mission of India to the United Nations reaffirmed that India has been a significant contributor to UN peacekeeping efforts since 1948, deploying nearly 300,000 troops across over 50 missions. Harish’s remarks underscored India’s commitment to international peace and security.

The occasion also recognised Major Abhilasha Barak, who received the 2025 Military Gender Advocate of the Year Award while serving with the UN Interim Force in Lebanon. This recognition showcases the diverse contributions of personnel involved in peacekeeping operations.
