India is actively expanding its defence diplomacy with major partners, as highlighted by Defence Secretary Rajesh Kumar Singh’s engagements at the Shangri-La Dialogue in Singapore on May 30. Singh conducted separate meetings with his counterparts from the Netherlands, Australia, and the European Union, focusing on bolstering defence cooperation.

In his meeting with the Dutch Defence Minister Dilan Yesilgoz-Zegerius, the two officials discussed the enhancement of military-to-military ties and explored avenues for defence industrial collaboration. These talks aimed to strengthen the growing strategic partnership between India and the Netherlands.

The Indian Ministry of Defence issued a statement on social media platform X, indicating that both nations are keen to develop mechanisms for closer defence interactions. This dialogue reflects the mutual interest in fostering collaboration in various defence sectors.

Engagements With Australia and EU Strengthened

Singh’s meetings also included discussions with Australian Defence Secretary Meghan Quinn, where the focus was on the progress of the India-Australia Comprehensive Strategic Partnership. The officials assessed anticipated high-level exchanges and identified potential areas for deepening defence collaboration.

During these interactions, the two sides evaluated ongoing strategic priorities that could be furthered through enhanced cooperation. The talks emphasised the mutual commitment to strengthening defence ties that are crucial for regional stability.

Additionally, Singh met with notable EU representatives, including Belen Martinez Carbonell and Lt Gen Enrico Barduani. Discussions centred around expanding strategic defence engagement, highlighting common security interests and exploring collaborative avenues that align with shared goals.

Tributes and Additional Discussions in Singapore

Earlier on May 30, Defence Secretary Rajesh Kumar Singh paid respects at the Kranji War Memorial in Singapore. He laid a wreath to honour soldiers who lost their lives in the World Wars, underlining the shared historical ties between India and Singapore.

The Ministry of Defence also released a statement regarding this tribute, emphasising the importance of acknowledging this shared history. Such solemn acts reinforce India’s commitment to recognising sacrifices made in the quest for peace and security.

On the same day, Singh engaged with Kelvin Brosseau, Canada’s Senior Associate Deputy Minister of National Defence. The discussions aimed at enhancing India-Canada defence cooperation, focusing on opportunities for deeper collaboration across key domains.

These meetings collectively reflect India’s commitment to strengthening its defence relations with various nations, with an emphasis on shared strategic interests and avenues for cooperative engagement in defence matters. The ongoing dialogues indicate a broader aim of enhancing regional security and stability through collaborative initiatives.
