India Hosts BIMSTEC Youth Leadership Exchange Programme For Regional Cooperation

The CSR Journal Magazine

India recently hosted the BIMSTEC Youth Leadership Exchange Programme, a week-long event that took place from April 25 to 30. The initiative gathered over 70 young leaders from the seven member countries of the Bay of Bengal Initiative for Multi-Sectoral Technical and Economic Cooperation (BIMSTEC). The Ministry of External Affairs (MEA) organised this programme in collaboration with Art Of Living, with activities taking place in Bangalore, Karnataka, and Bhubaneswar, Odisha.

The initiative was established following a commitment made by Prime Minister Narendra Modi at the 6th BIMSTEC Summit held in Bangkok in 2022. It aims to strengthen youth exchanges within the Bay of Bengal region while fostering collaboration among the member states. The MEA indicated that the programme is designed to facilitate structured leadership development, allowing participants to engage with regional issues and collaborate on potential solutions.

Participants experienced an applied-learning environment focused on innovation, enabling them to learn, experiment, and co-create in both holistic and practical ways. This approach reflects India’s ongoing dedication to enhancing sustainable regional cooperation and is intended to lay the groundwork for cultivating future leaders within the region.

Focus Areas of the Programme

The BIMSTEC Youth Leadership Exchange Programme emphasised several key focus areas aimed at integrating various essential elements of leadership. A significant aspect of the training was the integration of inner well-being with leadership skills, systems thinking, collaborative problem-solving, and community engagement. These components are intended to support the development of leadership qualities among youth across the BIMSTEC region.

The MEA explained that such an integrated approach is vital for fostering stronger regional cooperation and developing effective leaders who can navigate complex challenges. This focus on well-being and collaboration aligns with broader goals for social and economic progress across the participating countries.

Earlier initiatives supportive of this mission were marked by the BIMSTEC Secretariat in Dhaka, Bangladesh, where the launch of the new chapter of India’s leadership of the BIMSTEC Business Council took place. This significant step is geared towards enhancing intra-BIMSTEC trade and investment through improved business-to-business relations, as communicated in a recent release.

Future Prospects for BIMSTEC Collaboration

As part of India’s broader strategy to deepen ties within BIMSTEC, the new leadership of the Business Council has outlined a strategic agenda founded on three core pillars: Trade Facilitation, Multi-modal Connectivity, and Cooperation among Micro, Small and Medium Enterprises (MSMEs). These priorities correspond closely with the BIMSTEC ‘Bangkok Vision 2030,’ which envisions transforming the Bay of Bengal into a resilient, inclusive, and prosperous region.

Bangladesh, taking the lead in promoting cooperation within the Trade, Investment, and Development sector, plays a crucial role in facilitating business exchanges and dialogues. During the launch of the new chapter, BIMSTEC Secretary General Indra Mani Pandey highlighted that fostering business-to-business relationships is instrumental to propelling intra-BIMSTEC trade and investments.

Commenting on the potential of the BIMSTEC market, Tribhuvan Darbari, Chair of the BIMSTEC Business Council India, noted that the collective economic opportunity presented by BIMSTEC is estimated to be approximately USD 5 trillion. He indicated that the current moment is crucial for unlocking this potential through enhanced trade integration, streamlined supply chains, and improved connectivity within the region.
