IIM Bangalore Establishes First International Campus in Indonesia

The CSR Journal Magazine

IIM Bangalore is set to launch its first international campus in Indonesia, as announced by Prime Minister Narendra Modi. This development is deemed a significant advancement for India’s education sector and aims to benefit students and professionals throughout the ASEAN region. The announcement took place during Modi’s visit to Indonesia in conjunction with a joint statement made with Indonesian President Prabowo Subianto.

Campus to Be Located in Malang

The new campus will be situated in the Singhasari Special Economic Zone (SEZ) in Malang, marking IIM Bangalore’s initial foray into international educational establishments. This initiative adds to the expanding network of Indian institutions, as other notable campuses have been opened by IIM Ahmedabad in Dubai, IIT Delhi in Abu Dhabi, and IIT Madras in Zanzibar. The decision aligns with the objectives of India’s National Education Policy 2020, which advocates for the international expansion of top-quality Indian educational institutions.

This initiative is expected to enhance the educational landscape in the ASEAN region and further establish India’s presence as a leader in the global education arena. The inclusion of such a campus is a strategic move aimed at developing stronger academic collaborations within the region.

Curriculum Focused on Emerging Areas

The emphasis on these emerging areas aims to equip students with the necessary skills and knowledge to navigate the complexities of modern business environments. Furthermore, this curriculum design reflects a forward-thinking approach that aims to prepare learners for the challenges and opportunities that lie ahead in a rapidly changing world.

The academic structure not only benefits local participants but also enriches the educational experience by incorporating perspectives from various sectors. This approach will enhance overall student learning outcomes and engagement.

Phased Rollout of Programmes

The launch of the campus will take place in two distinct phases. Initially, the focus will be on Executive Education programmes designed for senior professionals, business leaders, and government officials. This phase aims to establish a solid foundation before transitioning to degree-granting management programmes after two years, contingent upon the successful implementation of the first phase.

While the primary target audience for the campus will be Indonesian students, it is anticipated that learners from across Southeast Asia will also be drawn to the institution. Participants will have access to opportunities for short academic immersion programmes at the Bengaluru campus, ensuring a well-rounded educational experience.

This initiative not only highlights India’s commitment to become a global educational hub but also strengthens academic and strategic relationships with Indonesia and the broader Indo-Pacific region. The establishment of IIM Bangalore’s campus is indicative of a larger vision for enhancing regional cooperation in higher education.
