The CSR Journal Magazine

A Hindu temple caretaker was discovered hanged from a tree following his disappearance three days earlier in southeastern Bangladesh. Nayan Sadhu, aged 40, was reportedly abducted by two unidentified individuals on April 19. His body was located in a hilly region on the outskirts of a village in Cox’s Bazar district, with local authorities stating that the corpse exhibited signs of decomposition upon its recovery.

Sadhu lived in the Dohazari area of Sthania Upazila in Chhattogram district, where he was employed as a caretaker and priest at a Shivakali temple in the Khurushkul union. According to eyewitnesses and police reports, the alleged kidnapping took place on the evening of April 19.

Authorities have initiated an inquiry into the circumstances surrounding Sadhu’s death, considering whether it was a homicide or a suicide. The body has been sent for a post-mortem examination to ascertain the precise cause of death.

Community Reactions

The Bangladesh Hindu Buddhist Christian Unity Council has strongly condemned the event, calling for immediate action to arrest those responsible. In a statement released, the organisation demanded not only the apprehension of the suspects but also “exemplary punishment against the perpetrators.”

A senior member of the Unity Council, Kajal Debnath, expressed confusion regarding the motive behind the alleged act. He noted, “We just cannot understand what could be the motive of killing an ordinary caretaker of a relatively small temple in a remote area.”

The general secretary of the Cox’s Bazar unit of the Bangladesh Puja Celebration Council, Jony Dhar, also raised concerns, indicating that the circumstances suggest a likelihood of murder. This alignment of views among community leaders highlights the growing unease within minority groups concerning safety and security.

Ongoing Investigation

Police commenced their investigation following a missing person’s report filed by Sadhu’s wife on the same day he disappeared. This case has emerged amid increasing anxieties expressed by minority groups in the region regarding their safety.

The Unity Council had earlier highlighted that 133 incidents of communal violence had been recorded in Bangladesh during the first quarter of the year, raising alarms about the welfare of religious minorities. This ongoing situation underscores the urgent need for measures to protect vulnerable communities.

Authorities are currently awaiting the results of the autopsy, which is a critical step in the ongoing investigation. The outcome of this examination may provide more clarity regarding the circumstances surrounding Sadhu’s tragic death and inform the next steps in addressing community concerns.
