Heroic Rescue Operation Amidst Delhi Hotel Fire

The CSR Journal Magazine

A significant blaze occurred at Flourish Stays B&B in Malviya Nagar, South Delhi, on June 3, 2026, resulting in the tragic deaths of twenty-one individuals. As smoke filled the air, chaos ensued, with several occupants trapped inside the building. Amidst this turmoil, Head Constable Dinesh Yadav of the Delhi Police emerged as a pivotal figure in the rescue efforts.

Upon receiving a distress call about the fire at approximately 8.50 am, Yadav, who was off-duty and dressed in plain clothing, immediately took action. He mounted his motorcycle and made his way towards the scene, encountering a fellow constable, Rampal, along the way. Recognising the severity of the situation, they both sprinted approximately 300 metres to reach the hotel, as traffic congestion near the Malviya Nagar Metro station hindered their progress.

As Yadav arrived, he was met with a horrific sight. The front of the hotel was aflame, and occupants were visible from the windows, calling out for help. The urgency of the situation was palpable as people extended their hands, pleading for rescue. Despite the danger, Yadav proceeded to assess the situation, initially focusing on the lower floors.

Yadav’s Courageous Actions in the Smoke-Filled Building

During his search, Yadav discovered two women trapped in a bathroom on the second floor, their hands visible through a narrow opening as they cried out for assistance. Acknowledging the exceptional danger caused by the fire’s intensity, which deterred bystanders from attempting a rescue, Yadav quickly devised a plan.

With a wooden ladder provided by a local resident, he ascended to the second floor, attempting to create an opening to reach the trapped women. He vividly recalled striking the structure with his hands until they were injured, but he persevered in his efforts. After he successfully made an opening through which he entered, he realised the precariousness of the situation, as thick smoke and flames engulfed the adjoining room.

Among the trapped individuals was an elderly Nigerian national, who weighed around ninety to one hundred kilograms. She allegedly urged Yadav to flee, insisting he save himself. Nevertheless, he lifted her onto his shoulders and, with the assistance of those outside, managed to pull her to safety before returning for the second woman, who was rescued in a similar manner.

Continued Rescue Efforts and Aftermath

Despite barely escaping the fire’s wrath, Yadav remained within the perilous environment, attended to the needs of others trapped on higher floors. His determination was evident as he navigated his way through the thick smoke, with the inferno escalating around him. He later described the experience, stating he had not been preoccupied with fear at that moment.

Upon his emergence, he noted the alarming developments, as electrical wires surrounding the property burst into flames, forcing nearby individuals to retreat. Witnesses reported hearing cries from various directions as Yadav and other officers continued to assist those in distress.

Ultimately, Yadav and his colleagues were able to rescue five people from the burning building, including the two women from the bathroom. However, the rescue took a personal toll on Yadav, who sustained injuries to his hands while breaking through debris and handling the situation.

His clothes bore the marks of his efforts, stained and damaged from smoke, soot, and blood. Despite the physical toll, the actions of Yadav won him commendation as one of the first responders who risked his life to safeguard the lives of others, emphasising the bravery exhibited during this tragic incident.
