Heavy Rain, Thunderstorms Likely Across North, Central and South India; Residents Advised Caution

The CSR Journal Magazine

The southwest monsoon is making significant strides across India, bringing much-needed relief to many regions that have experienced extreme summer temperatures. The India Meteorological Department (IMD) indicates that the monsoon reached Kerala on Thursday, June 4, and has since expanded its influence, resulting in widespread rainfall particularly in southern and coastal regions.

As of Friday, June 5, the monsoon has progressed into Karnataka, Tamil Nadu, and Goa. With this development, consistent rainfall is expected in the southern peninsula, where the IMD has issued warnings for heavy to very heavy rains. Areas in Kerala could face particularly intense rainfall on Saturday, June 6, and Sunday, June 7, which may result in waterlogging for urban low-lying areas.

Residents in these regions are urged to remain vigilant and monitor local weather updates, especially as rainfall intensity is predicted to rise over the weekend. The IMD continues to assess conditions closely to provide timely advisories for the affected areas.

Thunderstorms and Wind Patterns in Northern India

While the southern regions are under the monsoon’s influence, north and central India remain subject to demanding pre-monsoon heat conditions. A number of weather systems, including a powerful western disturbance, have triggered active thunderstorms across northern states. This particular phenomenon originates from the Mediterranean and is known to cause sudden precipitation and temperature dips in the Himalayan region.

On Saturday, individuals in Delhi, Haryana, Punjab, and portions of Rajasthan should prepare for light to moderate rainfall, alongside gusty winds that could reach speeds of 40 to 60 kilometres per hour. These unpredictable storms frequently accompany dangerous lightning strikes, necessitating caution. It is advisable to refrain from seeking refuge under trees and to remain indoors during intense weather events.

As thunderstorms roll through, officials warn of the risks associated with these sudden weather changes and advise the public to heed safety recommendations to mitigate potential hazards.

Temperature Forecasts and Heatwave Alerts

Despite the impending rainfall, the Indian subcontinent is not entirely shielded from the persistent heat. Following the current spell of storms, a rise in temperatures of three to five degrees Celsius is anticipated in northwest India. Additionally, regions such as Bihar and East Uttar Pradesh could experience heatwave conditions over the next few days.

A heatwave is characterized by an extended duration of excessively hot weather, often coupled with high humidity levels. Daytime temperatures in these areas may range between 34 and 39 degrees Celsius, prompting health and safety officials to remind the public about the importance of staying hydrated. Consuming fluids, including water and traditional drinks like buttermilk, is particularly essential during this heat.

The IMD remains vigilant in monitoring climate fluctuations across the country, aiding both agricultural communities and urban residents in their preparations for changing weather patterns. Official communications will provide area-specific updates, ensuring that the citizens are well-informed about forthcoming weather conditions.
