Heavy Rain Causes Landslides and Bridge Collapse in Himachal Pradesh

The CSR Journal Magazine

Heavy rain struck various regions of Himachal Pradesh on Saturday, leading to multiple landslides, particularly in and around Shimla. The intense downpour prompted authorities to issue warnings and advisories for residents to avoid dangerous areas. The conditions significantly impacted local infrastructure, with reports of a collapse of a retaining wall near Sanjauli College, resulting in debris flowing towards nearby houses.

Residents expressed their concerns regarding a private construction project, alleging that excavation activities had destabilised the slope, exacerbating the impact of the rain. They called for an immediate cessation of construction work and a geological survey of the area. Locals raised alarms over the vulnerability of three to four buildings in the vicinity, which they believe are at risk of similar incidents. Furthermore, this region experienced a similar landslide in June 2025, deepening community fears about safety.

Another landslide occurred at Mohal Rajhana on the outskirts of Shimla, where large boulders and debris reportedly buried two parked vehicles. The situation has raised significant alarm among residents, who are increasingly concerned about the frequency of such disasters in the area.

Severe Flooding Reported in Kinnaur District

Kinnaur district faced serious flooding due to swollen water bodies, with the Lippa stream inundating a single-storey house near the Lippa bus stand. Additional homes in the vicinity are reportedly under threat as the strong currents continue to pose risks. Soil erosion near the bus stand has caused damage to the adjoining road, making it difficult for residents to traverse safely.

The relentless rainfall has had a severe impact on local livelihoods and infrastructure, leading to requests for government assistance and intervention. Officials are closely monitoring conditions to address the imminent threats posed by the flooding and landslides.

Bridge Collapse and Rainfall Records

In a significant development, a bailey bridge near the Sangla bus stand collapsed into the Tongtongche stream. This bridge, which had been installed just last year, had reportedly been deemed unsafe by officials only a day prior to its collapse. This incident raises concerns over the integrity of similar infrastructural projects in light of extreme weather conditions.

The India Meteorological Department (IMD) reported that the region has experienced moderate to very heavy rainfall, prompting the issuance of a yellow alert for certain areas including Shimla, Kullu, Chamba, Bilaspur, and Sirmaur districts. The highest recorded rainfall since Friday evening was 158.9 mm in Nahan, followed by significant totals in Solan, Nagrota Suriyan, and other locations. The ongoing rain is expected to continue impacting the state, leading to further risk of landslides and infrastructure damage.

Local authorities are poised to respond to emergencies and facilitate rescue efforts if necessary. Continuous rainfall and resulting hazards underscore the need for ongoing vigilance among residents, as officials aim to mitigate the impact of the adverse weather conditions in the state.
