Haridwar Prepares for Kumbh Mela 2027 with Infrastructure Development Initiatives

The CSR Journal Magazine

The Uttarakhand government has accelerated infrastructure projects in Haridwar as part of preparations for the Kumbh Mela 2027. Chief Minister Pushkar Singh Dhami has instructed officials to complete all permanent infrastructure projects by October 2026 to ensure a successful event. The focus is on enhancing facilities for pilgrims, improving security measures, and establishing advanced surveillance systems. The state government has taken steps to expedite these projects, with a commitment to meeting all necessary requirements for the event.

New Command and Control Centre to Enhance Management

Key developments include the approval for a new Command and Control Centre (CCR-2) dedicated to the Kumbh Mela. Additionally, two new bridges over the Sukhi River and the Mayapur escape channel will be constructed. Chief Minister Dhami reviewed preparations during his recent visit to Haridwar, emphasizing the importance of convenience and safety for attendees while prioritizing swift infrastructure enhancement. He stated that the state government would exert maximum effort to facilitate the Kumbh Mela, directing officials to commence construction on the new CCR-2 building and the bridges without delay.

Financial Allocation for Infrastructure Projects

The construction project for the CCR-2 has been allocated ₹50.27 crore, with ₹20.11 crore released as the first installment. This centre will play a crucial role not only in managing Kumbh Mela but also in overseeing other significant bathing festivals and the Kanwar Yatra in Haridwar. The CCR-2 will be situated near the existing Mela Control Building (CCR) and will incorporate modern technologies. A helipad is planned for the top floor to facilitate helicopter operations during emergencies, improving crowd management and safety during large gatherings. The existing control building has served since 2004, and the new installation aims to meet the growing demands of pilgrims and enhance operational efficiency.

Bridge Developments for Improved Accessibility

The construction of a new cable net arch bridge, measuring 44.80 meters, has been sanctioned over the Sukhi River. This bridge will replace the existing causeway leading to the Kankhal cremation ground, which frequently poses dangers during monsoon seasons. The new infrastructure aims to eliminate risks associated with flooding and facilitate safe passage for pilgrims during the Kumbh Mela and other festivals. The overall budget for this project is set at ₹13.21 crore, with ₹5.28 crore allocated as the initial payment.

Additional Bridge Approval over Mayapur Escape Channel

Furthermore, a 60-meter span bow-string steel girder bridge will be constructed over the Mayapur escape channel, connecting Dakshdweep and Bairagi Camp. This new transportation route will aid in effective crowd management during the Kumbh Mela by linking the parking area in Dakshdweep with Bairagi Camp. The approved budget for this project stands at ₹12.46 crore, with the first installment of ₹4.98 crore already allocated.

Project Significance and Timely Execution Emphasized

Mela Officer Sonika highlighted the significance of these projects for ensuring the organization of Kumbh Mela 2027, highlighting the importance of accessibility, convenience, and safety for attendees. She has instructed the responsible agencies to initiate construction promptly and adhere to the established timelines with high-quality standards. Continuous monitoring and evaluation of progress and quality are mandated, with essential safety inspections and load testing scheduled to guarantee the integrity and readiness of the bridges for the event.
