The government of Uttarakhand has approved an increase in the monthly stipend for MBBS interns at government medical colleges, raising the amount from Rs 17,000 to Rs 25,000. This decision, made during a Cabinet meeting chaired by Chief Minister Pushkar Singh Dhami, aims to provide financial relief to medical trainees. The updated stipend will significantly benefit interns across the state’s five government medical colleges.

With this new adjustment, MBBS interns will receive an additional Rs 8,000 each month. This increased financial support will be applicable to interns studying at institutions located in Srinagar, Haldwani, Dehradun, Haridwar, and Almora, which offer both MBBS and postgraduate medical programmes.

Bihar Makes Move for PG Students

In a parallel move, the Bihar government has also announced a revised stipend structure for postgraduate medical students, with the new pay rates set to take effect from January 1, 2026. The financial support for first-year PG medical students has been raised to Rs 92,800 per month.

It’s a notable increase from the previous Rs 82,000. In addition, second-year students will now receive Rs 1,02,000 compared to the earlier Rs 90,200. Final-year postgraduate students are positioned to benefit the most, with their monthly stipend increasing from Rs 99,220 to Rs 1,12,200.

This adjustment equates to an additional Rs 12,980 in financial support for students in their last year of study. The decision was formally announced by the Bihar Health Department on September 11, and Health Minister Nishant Kumar emphasised that this enhancement aims to better support PG students financially.

The stipends granted by both Uttarakhand and Bihar address distinct levels of medical education but share a common goal: improving financial conditions for aspiring medical professionals. In Bihar, postgraduate students actively engage in patient care and contribute to hospital operations while working under the supervision of experienced doctors.
