Punjab Chief Minister Bhagwant Singh Mann has recently defended the state government’s efforts to combat drug trafficking and organised crime. During a press conference held on Monday, Mann stated that significant measures have been put in place to curb the influence of gangsters and dismantle drug networks in the region. He highlighted the deportation of eighteen gangsters from overseas back to Punjab since 2022 as a testament to this commitment.

In addition to these deportations, Mann outlined the actions taken by law enforcement, noting that large quantities of narcotics, weapons, and cash have been confiscated as part of the ongoing crackdown. The Chief Minister’s statements aim to reinforce his government’s stance on public safety and the fight against crime.

Response to Opposition Criticism

During his address, Mann accused opposition political parties of exploiting crime incidents for their own agendas rather than contributing proactively to solutions. He referred to this approach as “vulture politics,” suggesting that it detracts from the necessary focus on public service. Mann emphasised that Punjab deserves a political climate focused on constructive dialogue and genuine problem-solving rather than opportunistic reactions to crime.

The Chief Minister pointed out that nearly eighty per cent of drugs smuggled into Punjab from Pakistan have been intercepted. He further stated that the government’s future focus will shift towards addressing supply routes originating from Gujarat, Madhya Pradesh, and Rajasthan. This strategic pivot aligns with the state’s ongoing efforts to enhance security along its borders.

Mann’s comments also involved criticisms directed towards the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP), specifically regarding the issue of drug smuggling. He mentioned the risks associated with the 532-kilometre border with Pakistan and demanded an explanation from Union Home Minister about the influx of drugs into Punjab from BJP-ruled states.

Highlighting National Responsibility in Drug Smuggling

Another focus of Mann’s discourse included the notable seizure of approximately 3,000 kg of drugs at Mundra Port in Gujarat. He expressed concern about the lack of effective measures taken against those responsible for this significant drug haul, insinuating a need for greater accountability at the national level. His statements suggest a call for a collaborative national approach to combatting the pervasive issue of drug smuggling.

Furthermore, Mann stressed that the Punjab Police are actively engaged in efforts to dismantle criminal networks and disrupt their financial operations. He condemned previous administrations, namely the Congress and Akali Dal governments, for allowing the proliferation of gangster networks in the state.

In closing, the Chief Minister outlined a clear roadmap aimed at eradicating drug networks and dismantling gangster syndicates. He asserted that protecting the youth of Punjab and restoring the state’s reputation is a priority for his government. Additionally, he called for the involvement of central authorities to address the complex issue of cross-border smuggling, stressing that it requires a coordinated effort from all levels of government.
