Gulveer Singh Sets National Record With NYC Half Marathon Bronze

The CSR Journal Magazine

Gulveer Singh of India made headlines at the New York City Half Marathon 2026 by clinching the bronze medal and breaking the national record. On March 15, the 27-year-old distance runner recorded a remarkable finish time of 59:42 in the 21-kilometer race, placing third among a highly competitive elite men’s field. With this achievement, Gulveer became the first Indian man to finish a half marathon in under one hour.

Record-Breaking Achievement

Gulveer’s finish not only secured him a podium spot but also lowered India’s previous national men’s half-marathon record of 1:00:30, which was established by Avinash Sable at the Delhi Half Marathon in 2020. By improving the record by 48 seconds, Gulveer delivered one of the most exceptional performances by an Indian long-distance runner in history.

Competitive Race Overview

The race was tightly contested, with South African athlete Adriaan Wildschutt claiming the title in 59:30, while Zouhair Talbi, born in Morocco but racing for the United States, finished second with a time of 59:41. Gulveer was only a second behind Talbi, demonstrating the intensity of the competition. This event also marked what is considered Gulveer’s professional debut in the half marathon, adding to the significance of his performance.

Future Goals and Aspirations

Following his breakthrough run in New York, Gulveer Singh is setting his sights on future competitions, specifically aiming for podium finishes at the upcoming Commonwealth Games in Glasgow in July and the Asian Games in Japan in September. The army-supported runner is currently training in Colorado Springs, USA, where he expressed his enthusiasm for the upcoming events. “I’m fit and looking forward to good results in upcoming major international races,” he said.

Pioneering IndianDistance Running

Gulveer Singh has established himself as a leading figure in Indian distance running, holding multiple national records across various events, from the 3,000 meters track races to the 25-kilometer road race. He also earned a bronze medal in the 10,000 meters at the 2022 Asian Games and claimed both gold medals in the 5,000 meters and 10,000 meters at the 2025 Asian Championships held in Gumi, South Korea. As he prepares for future competitions, Gulveer aims to continue bringing success and recognition to Indian athletics.
