In Manipur’s Noney district, two individuals were killed and six others sustained injuries during hostilities attributed to the Zeliangrong United Front (ZUF) factions. Reports confirmed fresh gunfire in the early hours of Saturday, 29 August 2026, around 6 am, occurring between Nungtek Part II and Haochong, approximately 5 km from the district headquarters.

Officials indicated that the violence likely involved the ZUF-Jenchui and ZUF-Kamson factions. Local women activists, known as Meira Paibi, along with police forces, attempted to access the affected area but were unable to proceed due to security threats.

According to security personnel, one member of the ZUF-Jenchui faction was killed during the encounter, and six others were transported to medical facilities for treatment. The deceased has been identified as Jangailung, aged 29, from Muktina village, who suffered multiple bullet and shrapnel wounds.

Details of Previous Clashes

On the day prior to this incident, internal conflict between the factions occurred in Oktan village, raising alarms about the potential for further violence in the region. The police reported that this confrontation took place between 3:30 pm and 4 pm in the Haochong sub-division.

Following the clash, one cadre from the ZUF-Kamson faction succumbed to injuries sustained from gunfire. The deceased was identified as Dingtiplung Gonmei, also known as Nguiba Gonmei, who held the position of self-styled chief secretary within the organisation. This incident has intensified the apprehension regarding ongoing factional disputes in Noney district.

Officials noted that while there was a continuation of hostilities on Saturday morning, they could not confirm any additional casualties until further information was made available. There have been no official statements from either of the involved factions regarding the incidents.

Context of the Clashes

The Zeliangrong United Front is classified as an armed underground group operating under a tripartite Cessation of Operations (CoO) agreement sanctioned by the Government of India and the Government of Manipur. This peace accord was formalised in New Delhi over two days, on 27 and 28 December 2022.

The agreement established a Joint Monitoring Group to ensure compliance with the stipulated ground rules. The recent escalation of violence appears to contradict the spirit of this pact, indicating significant underlying tensions between the factions.

This resurgence of conflict within a short timespan reveals the volatility of the region, with local authorities remaining alert to the potential for further outbreaks. The situation demands close monitoring as well as prompt intervention to prevent further loss of life and injury.
