Gujarat Achieves Leading Position in Renewable Energy with 50.386 GW Capacity

The CSR Journal Magazine

Gujarat has secured the top spot in India’s renewable energy landscape, boasting a total capacity of 50.386 GW. This impressive figure includes 15850.56 MW from wind power and 32302.7 MW from solar energy. The state’s diverse portfolio highlights its significant contributions to both conventional and innovative renewable sources.

Additionally, Gujarat excels in rooftop solar installations, with over 13 lakh setups that contribute 7408.10 MW. Such achievements reflect the state’s commitment to advancing its renewable energy grid and supporting national targets for clean energy transition.

The prominence of renewable energy in Gujarat is underscored by the recent statement from the Chief Minister’s office, which noted that the state accounts for 17.82 per cent of India’s total renewable energy capacity.

Major Contributions to Solar and Wind Energy

As of May 2026, Gujarat’s achievements in solar energy are substantial, with an installed capacity of 32302.7 MW. This includes contributions from ground-mounted projects, rooftop installations, hybrid systems, and off-grid setups under the PM KUSUM scheme.

The key solar parks such as Charanka, Radhanesda, and Dholera illustrate Gujarat’s extensive infrastructure in solar energy production. Furthermore, the Khavda Renewable Energy Park in Kutch, which is under development, is set to be the largest renewable energy park globally, with 15.54 GW achieved so far.

In wind energy, Gujarat assigned 15850.56 MW of installed capacity, predominantly from the Kutch district, followed by significant contributions from Jamnagar, Devbhumi Dwarka, and other districts. This position solidifies the state as a pioneer in wind energy development since the adoption of its inaugural Wind Power Policy.

Policy Framework and Future Prospects

The Government of Gujarat has established a comprehensive policy framework to support its renewable energy ambitions. Since the introduction of the Wind Power Policy in 1993, subsequent initiatives have included various Solar Power Policies and recently, the Gujarat Integrated Renewable Energy Policy-2025.

This updated policy seeks to enhance large-scale and distributed renewable energy projects through flexible commissioning, battery storage integration, and the promotion of innovative technologies. The removal of capacity restrictions further encourages private sector participation and sustainability measures.

As of May 2026, Gujarat is actively working on 1531 projects that include 1320 solar projects, 115 wind projects, and 96 hybrid projects, amounting to a total pipeline of 12.159 GW. The state’s ambitious target is to reach 105 GW by 2030, contributing significantly to India’s aim of achieving 500 GW of non-fossil energy.

In preparation for future developments, the state is ensuring a robust infrastructure for grid connectivity and project implementation through initiatives like the Akshay Urja Setu online portal. This strategic approach reflects Gujarat’s commitment to being at the forefront of the renewable energy sector in India.
