Iran extended its thanks to India for its involvement in the state funeral of the late Supreme Leader, Ayatollah Ali Khamenei. This gesture has been termed a “precious testament” to the lasting relationship between the two nations. The Iranian statement stressed that the people of Iran “will never forget” the solidarity shown by New Delhi during this significant occasion.

Representatives from India included Bihar Governor Syed Atta Hasnain and Minister of State for External Affairs Pabitra Margherita, who were part of a government delegation at the week-long mourning ceremony that commenced on July 3. Notable political figures such as former Jammu and Kashmir Chief Minister Mehbooba Mufti and senior Congress leader Salman Khurshid also attended the event.

Iranian Embassy’s Statement on the Tribute

A statement from the Iranian Embassy, shared on the platform X, expressed “heartfelt gratitude and sincere appreciation” to the Indian government for sending an official delegation to pay tribute to Khamenei. The Supreme Leader was reportedly killed in an airstrike on January 28. The embassy highlighted that the participation by Indian representatives is regarded as a vital gesture of friendship and respect, reinforcing the already strong ties between the two nations.

Furthermore, the embassy mentioned that the involvement of Indian political leaders, scholars, and representatives from various faiths showcased “mutual respect and sincere solidarity” with the Iranian populace during this time of national sorrow. The embassy reiterated its appreciation for the condolences expressed by Indian officials and citizens, underscoring the importance of cross-national solidarity during such mourning periods.

Subsequent Funeral Arrangements and Ceremonies

The events surrounding Khamenei’s funeral included a massive procession in central Tehran on Monday, where an outpouring of public grief was evident. Following the Tehran ceremony, Khamenei’s remains are scheduled to be transported to Qom, a city renowned for its significance in Iran’s Shiite hierarchy, where additional ceremonies will be held on Tuesday.

On Wednesday, the remains will be flown to Iraq, specifically to the two important Shiite holy shrine cities of Najaf and Kerbala, for more commemoration. The body is expected to return to Iran on Thursday, culminating in another procession in Mashhad.

This comprehensive set of ceremonies reflects the profound impact Khamenei had on Iran and the deep sense of loss within the country. His death marked a significant moment for various sectors, prompting expressions of solidarity and mourning not just from within Iran but also internationally, including from India.
