Google Ends Free Android Backups: Data to Count Against 15GB Limit Starting Today

The CSR Journal Magazine

Google is altering the way Android backups are managed by counting them against the free storage limit of 15GB provided with a Google account. This new policy is set to come into effect on July 7. Users will now find that all data backed up from Android devices—such as SMS messages, call history, and app data—will contribute to the overall storage capacity of their Google accounts.

Previously, only images and videos uploaded to Google Photos, along with other MMS data, contributed to the storage count. This change represents a significant shift in how backup data is considered, leading to implications for users who rely on the current free storage provision.

Increased Use of Google Account Storage

Under the revised policy, all types of backup data including call history, device settings, and app information will now be included in the calculation of Google account storage. Users will have to be more cautious about the data they backup to avoid quickly depleting their available 15GB limit, which was previously unaffected by such backups.

Google is also introducing enhanced backup controls as part of this update. Users will have additional options to customize their backups, including toggles to enable or disable the backup of SMS and MMS messages, call history, and device settings. These preferences will be accessible through the Google backup page in the settings of Android devices.

Despite the potential for users to approach their free storage limit more rapidly, a Google spokesperson stated that the impact on storage space would be minimal. They mentioned that the average additional usage due to the new policy is expected to be around 40MB.

Gradual Rollout and Future Implications

This storage policy change will initially affect new users of Android backups from July 7, with existing accounts experiencing the changes in stages over the following months. The shift aligns with Google’s ongoing updates to its storage policy, which is aimed at maintaining efficiency and clarity for users.

Earlier in May, Google introduced a trial phase for a revised free storage limit for certain new accounts, reducing the default provision from 15GB to 5GB unless users provided a linked phone number. This reflects a broader trend within the company to optimise storage utilisation across their platforms.

For those seeking additional storage, Google One plans are available starting at Rs 59 per month for an increase to 30GB. Users may also access additional storage via Google AI subscriptions, making it easier to manage data needs in light of the new policy.
