Fuel Price Increase Results in Transport Fare Hikes Across Pakistan

The CSR Journal Magazine

The recent hike in fuel prices has had a significant impact on transport fares throughout Pakistan, further straining commuters who are already facing inflationary challenges. Reports from Samaa TV indicate that this latest increase will place additional financial pressure on the public, significantly affecting daily travel costs.

In Lahore, the Regional Transport Authority (RTA) held discussions with various transport operators to address fare adjustments. These talks culminated in a modest fare increase of 3 per cent to 4 per cent. RTA Secretary Rana Mohsin engaged in negotiations with transporters who had initially sought larger increases, citing rising fuel costs as the primary reason. In response, the RTA permitted a limited fare adjustment while explicitly warning against any unauthorised increases.

Mohsin stressed that transport operators must adhere to the newly approved fare ranges, stating that any violations would lead to strict legal repercussions. Moreover, he announced that the updated fare lists would be put into effect immediately. The decision to adjust fare rates was influenced by the observation that petroleum prices have surged by over 7 per cent.

Rising Travel Costs Affect Commuters

Notably, intercity transport routes have experienced sharp fare increases. For example, travel from Lahore to Rawalpindi now costs PKR 2,340, while journeys to Peshawar have risen to PKR 3,100. Similarly, the fare to Faisalabad has increased to PKR 1,260, and the rate for the Lahore-Karachi route now stands at PKR 9,720, marking a substantial rise in costs.
