FSSAI Prohibits Dabur’s Claims of 100% Natural Products

The CSR Journal Magazine

The Food Safety and Standards Authority of India (FSSAI) has taken steps to address misleading marketing claims often seen on food and beverage products. Recently, the FSSAI raised alarms over labels such as “100% Natural,” “100% Pure,” and “Zero Sugar,” stating that these claims can create confusion among consumers regarding the nutritional quality of the items. The regulator’s stance highlights the potential for these assertions to mislead individuals into thinking that a product is healthier merely based on its labelling.

Experts warn that such claims could foster a so-called “health halo,” leading consumers to believe that products are automatically healthy. This situation encourages increased consumption, which may not align with the reality of nutritional values. Consumers are reminded that factors like ingredient lists, serving sizes, and overall diet are far more critical than the slogans displayed on packaging.

According to health professionals, reliance solely on the front packaging can be detrimental. They advise that an informed decision should involve scrutiny of nutritional labels and ingredient lists to understand the complete picture of what a product contains.

Health Implications of Natural Ingredients

The perception of honey as a healthier alternative to refined sugar is prevalent due to its natural origin and the presence of antioxidants. However, Dr Amit Prakash Singh, a Consultant in Internal Medicine at CK Birla Hospital, cautions that honey is still high in sugar content. Regular consumption of large quantities can trigger adverse health effects, including weight gain and elevated blood sugar levels.

Individuals with conditions such as diabetes or obesity should particularly monitor their portion sizes when consuming honey. Simply replacing refined sugar with honey does not eliminate health risks associated with excessive sugar intake.

Similarly, ghee is gaining popularity, particularly in Indian cuisine, as a natural fat. Although it can be incorporated into a balanced diet, it should not be assumed to be healthy due to labels like “100% Pure” or “100% Natural.” The high saturated fat content means that excessive consumption can adversely affect cholesterol levels and lead to weight gain, emphasizing the importance of moderation.

Understanding “Zero Sugar” Claims

Many products are now marketed as “zero sugar” or “sugar-free,” but experts advise caution. While these items may lack added sugar, they could be high in other detrimental components such as saturated fats, sodium, or artificial sweeteners. Therefore, a product labelled as sugar-free could still be calorie-dense and nutritionally inadequate, even if it does not contain sugar.

Consumers are encouraged to scrutinise the nutrition labels comprehensively, as a focus on a single claim can lead to misconceptions. Products with claims like “0 calories” might still contain additives or offer little overall nutritional value.

Healthcare professionals emphasise the necessity of reading nutrition labels before purchasing packaged foods. Essential aspects to check include the ingredient list, total calories per serving, sugar content, saturated fat levels, sodium amounts, and serving sizes. This information can help consumers make informed dietary choices.

The Importance of Portion Control

Experts point out that even nutritious foods can lead to health issues if consumed excessively. Items like honey, ghee, and nuts, while beneficial, are also calorie-rich and require mindful portion management. A balanced diet focuses not just on the selection of healthier foods but also on maintaining appropriate portion sizes.

FSSAI’s concerns regarding claims such as “100% natural” and “zero sugar” serve as a valuable reminder to consumers. Avoid letting marketing tactics dictate dietary decisions; instead, a thorough understanding of nutrition labels, ingredients, and portion sizes forms the cornerstone of healthy eating practices.

Regardless of the specific product, adherence to mindful consumption and informed choices remains central to achieving a balanced diet and maintaining health.
