Four People Dead, 29 Injured in Jalpaiguri Bus-Lorry Collision

A tragic incident occurred on June 21 in Maynaguri, West Bengal, where a significant collision between a bus and a lorry resulted in the deaths of four individuals and left 29 others injured. The accident took place on National Highway 27 and was reported shortly after the event, prompting immediate medical and emergency responses.

According to reports, 32 people were involved in the crash, and they were subsequently transported to a local hospital for emergency treatment. Sadly, four of the injured victims later succumbed to their injuries despite medical intervention.

BJP Member of Parliament Jayanta Kumar Roy confirmed the details, stating that the individuals injured were a mix of men and women, with 15 men and 17 women receiving care at the medical facility. Some of the injured have reportedly been shifted to other hospitals for further treatment.

Authorities Respond to the Situation

In the wake of the collision, law enforcement has initiated an investigation into the circumstances surrounding the accident. Senior officials, including the Deputy Inspector General of Police, have visited the scene to assess the situation and provide updates on the ongoing investigation.

Roy reiterated the seriousness of the incident, noting that measures are being taken to ensure the well-being of those affected. “Some patients are being transferred to other hospitals. The investigation is ongoing, and the DIG is on-site,” he stated.

West Bengal Chief Minister Suvendu Adhikari expressed his condolences regarding the incident. He has emphasised that all possible assistance will be extended to those injured in the crash and their families. The Chief Minister’s office has coordinated with local agencies to conduct rescue and relief operations.

Compensation and Assistance for Victims

Following the accident, Chief Minister Adhikari announced a compensation package to assist the families affected by the tragedy. The plan includes Rs 5 lakh for the next of kin of the deceased, Rs 1 lakh for those who sustained severe injuries, and Rs 50,000 for individuals who incurred minor injuries in the incident.

The Chief Minister assured that the state government would cover all medical expenses incurred by the injured at government hospitals. He stated that the government stands in solidarity with the affected families during this difficult time, ensuring they receive the necessary support.

As investigations continue, officials are working to determine the exact cause of the accident. Initial reports indicate that the North Bengal State Transport Corporation (NBSTC) bus, which was travelling from Siliguri to Cooch Behar, collided with a stationary trailer. The impact of the collision caused significant damage, leading to passengers becoming trapped inside the bus.
