DRDO Achieves Successful First Flight-Test of ‘Kusha’ Long-Range Surface-To-Air Missile

The Defence Research and Development Organisation (DRDO) has successfully completed the inaugural flight-test of the ‘Kusha’ Long-Range Surface-to-Air Missile. This event took place on July 23, 2026, from the APJ Abdul Kalam Island, situated off the Odisha coast. The test was aimed at evaluating the missile’s interception capability against an electronic target that simulated a high-speed and high-altitude aerial threat.

The missile system demonstrated its effectiveness by successfully neutralising the simulated target during the test. This capability underlines the sophistication of the ‘Kusha’ missile system, which is designed to counter a variety of aerial threats, including fighter aircraft, missiles, unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs), and large enemy aircraft across a significant range and altitude envelope.

Minister Singh took to social media to announce the success of the test, stating, “The @DRDO_India has successfully conducted the maiden flight test of Long-Range Surface-to-Air Missile Kusha today from the APJ Abdul Kalam Island off the coast of Odisha.” He congratulated the DRDO and all stakeholders involved in this accomplishment.

Leadership and Oversight During the Test

The entire flight-test process was monitored closely by Defence Secretary Rajesh Kumar Singh, who also serves as the Secretary of the Department of Defence R&D and the Chairman of the DRDO. His leadership was crucial in ensuring the successful execution of the launch, and he subsequently extended his congratulations to the team members who contributed to this achievement.
