Five-Year-Old Boy Killed in Lioness Attack in Gujarat’s Amreli

The CSR Journal Magazine

A lioness has reportedly snatched a five-year-old boy from his grandfather’s arms and killed him in Amreli district, Gujarat. The tragic event has incited fear and anger within the local community. It is the third attack involving lions in this district within the last month, raising concerns about wildlife safety and human interaction.

The incident transpired on the evening of June 25, 2026, in Chaturi village, located in the Khanbha taluka adjacent to the Gir mountain range. As per officials, the young boy, identified as Jian, was walking with his grandfather when the lioness suddenly launched an attack. Before the grandfather was able to respond, the lioness seized Jian and retreated into the nearby forest.

Following the attack, cries for help echoed throughout the village, prompting villagers to rush to the location with sticks in hand. Several young men from the community attempted to rescue Jian from the lioness prior to the arrival of the forest department team. Efforts to drive the wild animal away included attempts to assault it with sticks; however, these efforts were unsuccessful.

Recovery Efforts and Finding of Remains

Villagers later discovered Jian’s bloodied body approximately one kilometre from the village, leaving his family in a state of devastation. Shortly after receiving notifications regarding the incident, a team from the forest department, including Deputy Conservator of Forests (DCF) and Assistant Conservator of Forests (ACF) from Dhari Gir East, arrived at the scene for an assessment.

As stated by ACF Kapil Bhatia, the incident took place within the Chaturi revenue area of the Tulsishyam Range. Responding quickly, the department initiated a search operation to capture the lioness involved. During this operation, two lions were discovered near the site, leading to the tranquilisation and caging of one lioness.

The extensive search operation continued well into Wednesday morning, resulting in the capture of five lions after a nine-hour endeavour. Disturbingly, during this process, officials found the remains of the child in the vomit of a male lion, which have since been sent for forensic analysis. Samples are also being collected from the other lions for further examination.

Community Response and Future Safety Measures

The death of the young boy has triggered widespread sorrow and anger among the residents of Chaturi village. Many locals have expressed their concerns over the increasing frequency of lion attacks in the area, accusing the forest department of neglecting the rising danger posed by these wild animals.

Residents reportedly experienced sleepless nights due to the presence of lions even before this latest incident, and they are now demanding government intervention. They are calling for officials to visit the village and provide written assurance regarding their safety. Additionally, community members are seeking the establishment of permanent forest guards and a local forest department office.

In light of recent events, the forest department has issued a warning to residents, advising them to exercise caution. Officials recommend that villagers avoid travelling alone during the evening or nighttime due to the presence of wildlife. They also suggest forming groups for safety and carrying equipment such as sticks and torches to help mitigate risks associated with potential animal attacks.
