PM Modi To Flag Off India’s First Hydrogen-Powered Train Between Jind and Sonipat

The CSR Journal Magazine

Prime Minister Narendra Modi is set to inaugurate India’s first hydrogen-powered train on July 17, marking a pivotal development in the nation’s railway sector. This initiative is a significant stride towards promoting clean and sustainable mobility across India’s transportation networks. Designed and engineered entirely within the country, the train showcases India’s advancing capabilities in high-end railway engineering.

By introducing this train, India joins a select group of nations that have operational hydrogen-powered trains, indicating a commitment to environmental sustainability in public transport.

Technology and Environmental Benefits

The hydrogen train operates on hydrogen fuel cell technology, which generates electricity by converting hydrogen into energy. This innovative process produces only water vapour as a by-product, resulting in zero carbon emissions during operations. Such an advancement signifies a major reduction in air pollutants compared to diesel-powered trains.

Moreover, the Hydrogen Train significantly reduces operational noise levels, enhancing the overall travel experience for passengers. Unlike traditional electric trains, which depend on extensive overhead electrification infrastructure, this new train generates electricity onboard, making it a more efficient and eco-friendly means of transport.

The utilisation of green hydrogen further aids in diminishing reliance on electricity derived from fossil fuel-based power plants, thus supporting India’s broader transition towards sustainable transportation solutions.

Specifications and Capacity

This innovative hydrogen-powered train features a configuration of ten coaches, distinguishing it as one of the longest hydrogen-powered passenger trains developed globally. The train is equipped with a propulsion system boasting 3,200 horsepower, rendering it one of the most powerful hydrogen trainsets currently in operation. This development not only enhances operational capacity but also underscores India’s commitment to advancing its railway technology.

In addition to the flag-off of the hydrogen train, Prime Minister Modi is expected to dedicate various National Highway projects in Haryana, which will cumulatively amount to over Rs 12,470 crores. This dual initiative emphasizes both infrastructure development and a shift towards more sustainable modes of transportation.

On July 17, the Prime Minister will also unveil multiple development projects in Chandigarh and Punjab, further reflecting the government’s commitment to improving connectivity and infrastructure across the region.
