Father-Son Duo Saves Lives During Delhi Hotel Fire

The CSR Journal Magazine

A tragic fire erupted at the Flourish Stay B&B hotel in Malviya Nagar, Delhi, resulting in the loss of 21 lives. Amidst this disaster, Riyazuddin Mansuri and his son Armaan emerged as unexpected heroes. Their actions on the morning of the incident helped save several individuals who were trapped inside the burning structure.

As chaos unfolded, with smoke billowing and guests attempting to escape, the pair, who own a nearby mattress shop, sprang into action. They observed people struggling and leaping from upper floors, prompting them to think quickly and respond with a plan that would potentially save lives.

Quick Response and Makeshift Rescue

The Mansuris hurriedly gathered mattresses from their shop and placed them directly on the road below the hotel. This makeshift landing area was intended to cushion the fall for those forced to jump from the building. Videos circulating on social media showed several individuals successfully landing on the mattresses, which were crucial in preventing further injuries.

“I saved the lives of eight people by laying down mattresses from my shop onto the road when I saw people jumping from the building,” Riyazuddin Mansuri stated. The family did not take financial considerations into account during this emergency, as their priority was ensuring the safety of the trapped guests.

The on-site quick-thinking of the father-son duo also included providing sheets to cover the bodies of victims once the fire was under control, showcasing their compassion amidst the chaos.

Critical Fire Incident Details

Reportedly, the fire began at approximately 8.30 am on June 3, 2026, and rapidly spread throughout the hotel, a five-storey building characterised by a narrow structure with limited escape routes. Investigations have indicated that the establishment had only one exit, and many windows were sealed, severely hindering escape efforts.

Following the fire, local residents and rescue teams worked together to extricate victims. A total of 58 individuals were rescued and transported to hospitals for treatment, though 21 casualties were confirmed, including 12 foreign nationals. These tourists were reportedly in Delhi to support relatives receiving medical treatment at local hospitals.

This incident has raised several safety concerns regarding the hotel. Authorities have claimed that the hotel was operating without a fire No-Objection Certificate (NOC) and had allegedly exceeded the permitted number of rooms. Official sources stated the establishment was licensed for six rooms, yet reportedly operated around 25 rooms, some of which may have been in the basement.

Legal Consequences for Hotel Management

In the wake of the tragedy, police arrested Lavkesh Bajaj, the hotel owner, and have initiated legal proceedings against him. The charges include culpable homicide due to the apparent violations of safety regulations. This incident has spotlighted the urgent need for stringent enforcement of safety standards in hotels and similar establishments.

Investigations are ongoing, with authorities examining the structural aspects of the hotel to determine whether any additional floors had been constructed without proper approvals, which could further complicate the legal situation for the management.

This tragic event has not only cast a pall over the local community but also sparked a broader conversation on building safety within Delhi, highlighting areas for improvement in fire safety and emergency preparedness.
