EU Leaders at Kartavya Path: ‘A Successful India Benefits the World’

The CSR Journal Magazine

European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen on Monday described a successful India as a vital pillar for a more stable, prosperous, and secure world. Speaking after attending India’s 77th Republic Day celebrations at Kartavya Path, the EU chief emphasised that the international community stands to benefit from India’s continued rise. The visit, which precedes a high-stakes India-EU summit, marks a significant diplomatic milestone as both von der Leyen and European Council President Antonio Costa attended the parade as chief guests – the first time two top European Union leaders have jointly held this distinction.

The presence of the European leadership in New Delhi underscores the deepening strategic alignment between India and the 27-nation bloc. As President Droupadi Murmu unfurled the national flag, the parade showcased a blend of India’s indigenous military hardware and its diverse cultural heritage. Von der Leyen later noted on social media that being part of the ceremony was the “honour of a lifetime,” framing India’s domestic achievements as a net positive for a volatile global order.

Deepening Ties on the Global Stage

The inclusion of a European Union military contingent, led by Colonel Frederik Simon Spruijt, added a layer of tangible cooperation to the ceremonial proceedings. By marching alongside Indian regiments, the European presence signalled a shift from purely economic discourse to a more robust security-oriented partnership. This symbolic gesture comes at a time when both entities are seeking to diversify their supply chains and strengthen maritime security in the Indo-Pacific.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi, alongside Defence Minister Rajnath Singh and the country’s top military brass, hosted the European delegation amidst a backdrop of increasing geopolitical relevance for New Delhi. The choice of chief guests often reflects India’s foreign policy priorities for the coming year. By inviting the dual leadership of the EU, India has signalled that its engagement with Europe has moved beyond individual bilateral ties with nations like France or Germany, focusing instead on the bloc as a single, powerful strategic unit.

Focus on the Landmark Trade Deal

While the Republic Day parade served as the ceremonial highlight, the diplomatic heavy lifting is scheduled for Tuesday during the India-EU summit. Von der Leyen and Costa are expected to engage in intensive talks with Prime Minister Modi, with a primary focus on the long-pending Free Trade Agreement. Negotiators are reportedly under pressure to find common ground on issues such as digital trade, sustainability standards, and market access, which have historically slowed the progress of the deal.

Beyond trade, the discussions are set to pivot toward green energy transitions and technology transfers. As both regions face the challenges of climate change and digital transformation, the summit aims to formalise roadmaps for cooperation in semi-conductors and artificial intelligence. Security remains a critical pillar of the agenda, with both sides expected to deliberate on regional stability and the necessity of a rules-based international order, echoing von der Leyen’s sentiments regarding India’s role as a stabilising force.

India as the Centre of Global Attention

The 77th Republic Day has further cemented New Delhi’s position as a focal point of global diplomacy. The attendance of European leaders follows a tradition of hosting influential world figures, ranging from former US President Barack Obama to French President Emmanuel Macron. The presence of high-profile leaders like von der Leyen and Costa, alongside messages of congratulations from other global powers, reinforces the narrative that India’s domestic milestones are now events of international significance.

This year’s celebrations also mark a full return to diplomatic normalcy following the disruptions caused by the COVID-19 pandemic in earlier years. By hosting the EU leadership, India is navigating a complex global landscape, balancing its traditional non-alignment with a modern, proactive approach to international partnerships. As the delegation prepares for the summit-level talks, the message from Kartavya Path remains clear: the partnership between the world’s largest democracy and the European Union is no longer just an option, but a global necessity.
